Vegas is in deep doo doo trouble..Lake Mead and Lake Powell are both drying up...that's why I don't understand the huge amount of building planned for southern Utah...but then again it's developers shoving the almighty dollar in the good ol boys

Diversion from the Colorado (which no longer even reaches the Gulf of Mexico, as its tapped out). No accounting for drought. Phoenix and L.V. couldn't exist without cheap energy for electric and moving water, and it's coming to an end.

Flood and drought cycles are pretty normal on the Colorado Plateau. That being said tho, we've build very large cities in hostile environments. Lake Powell is expected to see a 50 foot rise this year.

I don't know if any of you have heard of the Lake Powell Pipeline. It's not a done deal but sounds like it will be.

I have written a couple of posts on the Colorado River Compact from the 1920's and how the pipeline plays into that if you're interested

These two are on the pipeline, but there are other's on the blog about the habitat building flows this spring as well as inflow forecasts.

I wouldn't really know though for sure. I don't think tons of nightclubs will ever come to Salt Lake until our convoluted liquor laws are changed. But I don't see why anything would deter there being good shopping or restaurants downtown. Who says there already isn't?

Well, I'm just going by what I have heard from these threads. Alot of people are saying that SLC does not have a very lively downtown, that it becomes "dead" after everyone goes home from work. I would hope their just exhadurating, though...

Yes, since '02 Olympics, Utah has sizzled in development & growth. But a word to the wise - do you think it immune to the significant worldwide, in particular US economic correction going on? My guess would be most of the positive hype you're seeing here is from those with the most to lose....., while keeping in mind that all the great "development" going on you see here were projects funded and permitted at least a couple years ago and likely do not have a current market or tenants.

I says that. Well not completely.
SLC does have a few decent nightclubs. But just a couple. Theres Port o Call and Vortex and the Huka bar (which is in sandy). After that the list waters down. All for reasons that are obvious.
Yea Salt Lake has decent shopping and good restaurants, but these things dont make for a happening night life. Its the pubs/bars/clubs that seal the deal for tourists. Whereas there could be a ton of things to do in any given city during the day which is fun. But once the sun goes down and there aint **** to do, that leaves many people with an unsatisfied feeling. They leave wondering whether this town has any soul.

But you pretty much hit it on the dot. This is no exagerration.

The city, run by the church, constantly intimidates bar owners and sucks up alot of the city's night life. One mess up, which could be an underage drinker with a fake i.d., and they'll be quick to cite the clubs at least $10,000. There was that club in late December of last year that got closed down for 3 days, which included new years eve, because some underage kid with a fake i.d. caused some trouble. That was their first violation ever, and this place was there for at least a decade.
Just as another example: The Monkey Bar in Park City, which has been there for a long time, was closed for a month and had to pay a fine during the winter (prime season in Park City). Eventually, their liquor license was revoked, and the owner has been prevented from pursuing one for at least 3 years! All for what? Lewd dancing (I **** you not!). Now tell me what kind of succesful entrepenour would want to invest in a bar in Salt Lake? You think the Maloof brothers (maybe not them, but you get the picture) are going to want to invest a dime here? Heck No.

From what I know/read, Salt Lake zones its private clubs and taverns to 2 per block. Thats just one of many of "those" laws, and the LDS Church has been entering the endevour of "buying out" pub owners.

The part that sucks is that these people just dont understand. They think us activists for a real night life are all drunks. They'll never understand.

My wife and I just came back from visiting there again, the more we go there the more we like it. I think it is similar to Santa Fe without the pretense. However as the thread indicates where is the industry to create the jobs for the masses they seem to building for?

It seems ripe for an area of resort development for a large chain such as Marriott or Hyatt as there are currently only two small resorts. Red Mountain Spa and Green Valley Spa are the only two resorts there unless someone knows of any others. With it's proximity to large cities and eye dazzling scenery, I would only imagine it is a matter of a short period of time. This would definitely help the area in terms of jobs.

Does anyone know of any major resorts/hotels being planned in the Southern Utah area? I am in the business (management not development) and would love to hear of anything that you may know that I don't. I live in Seattle, so don't get much news here. Any ideas as to why this has not occurred already, perhaps some restrictions on water or development??

Yeah, I am curious about that too! You'd think that for a city with such beautiful surroundings, and one that has been rated the #1 place to live, their would be some pretty interesting developments going on.
