Your winter actually isnt that much different to ours. I was always of the opinion that places like boston stayed below 0c all winter. But in reality they are only 2/3c below us.

My climate isn't the same as Boston, different part of the state. My average January low is -10°C, I don't think that is usual in Northern Ireland. And week to two week stretches of never going above freezing aren't unusual. Only three nights last month were above 0°C.
Some stats on your climates would be useful for comparison.
Just type Belfast or Derry in wiki. NI is MUCH milder than Boston at an average high around 5c to 7c Boston is alot lower and has the ability to get lower from its average.

Plus it has the ability to get higher from it's average. Boston averages a few degrees colder, but more importantly it has bigger temperature swings. This doesn't apply to other parts of Massachusetts, which have differing climates.

owenc has said Belfast is warmer than where he is so I thought another city might be better. My location is somewhat different from Boston as well. This is Boston's averages:
January (2.6°C/ -5.2°C)
My location:
January (1.7°C/ -10.2°C)
Both 1981-2010 numbers. Main difference is night temperatures, the two stations are about 85 miles apart.

Inland should have larger swings than Boston, its weather station is right next to the harbor.
From here (1893-2010):
average of 10 days/ year with lows below or equal to 0°F (-17.8°C), 150 days a year with lows below or equal to 32°F (-0°C) and 37 days / year with days that fail to go above freezing. 8 days with maxes 23°F (-5°C) or colder. From Jan-Feb, about 10 days each month have maxes 41°F (+5°C) or warmer.
