Allapattah Flats is a wildlife management area 20 miles west of me. Sorry for so many photos, but I have fallen in love with the trees here. Temp was 84F.

Had the place all to myself

Raspberry flowers (Rubus trivialis)

Pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata)

Purple thistle (Cirsium horridulum)

Classic Florida scene

Into the hammock. These are the tallest trees in my county.

Water hickory leaves (Carya aquatica)

American elm (Ulmus americana). Extremely rare down here, though they are abundant in these woods.

Understory. The one with flaky bark is water hickory.

World's tallest water hickory (maybe). Impressive bole.

Sugarberry (Celtis laevigata)

Papaya with new fruit (Carica papaya). They are actually native.

Hmm....

Swamp tupelo (Nyssa biflora). Also extremely rare.

Looks like a continental climate very much like Pennsylvania.

There's a lot of truth in that. Most of the tree species there are at the southernmost points of their ranges. Some evergreen oaks, but also lots of elms, hickories, tupelo, sugarberry, mulberry.

I went to Atlanta last week.

Atlanta has a nice botanical gardens.

With a tropical rainforest! (indoors, of course)

And semi-arid scrub!

Supposedly there's about 80 degrees of heat and 80 degrees of cold.

Chapel Hill is about a week behind Atlanta.

Some signs of spring. Sunday, a store placed pansies in front. Hardy annuals, but they wouldn't have been out before.

As soon as the snow melts...

Gloomy day in Boston yesterday. Rained late in the afternoon.

Curious George shop! After visiting, I now know how to identify authentic "Curious George" stories from ones by later writers.

Cheers!
