It's interesting that most people think it is merciful to put an animal out of it's misery when it is suffering, but find it difficult to let a suffering human die with dignity.

Not in all cases but in many i think those that say no don't know how much people really do suffer.
I'm a nurse. I know exactly how much people suffer. I find it reprehensible that we would allow such suffering.
When my mother was dying, she was begging me to smother her with a pillow. Nobody should have to go through that. Nobody.

of militant Atheism than other societies, counter intuitively. Because of the
low level of religiosity, local atheists are very mellow and may even continue
to identify on the census as Catholics because they might still attend stuff
like baptisms and easter with family at the church, since it doesn't really feel
like there's such a need to rebel.

I still sometimes tell people I'm Russian Orthodox, because that's what it says on my birth certificate. Sometimes I just don't feel like going into the "I'm an atheist" spiel and all the subsequent arguments or explanations that are bound to follow.
For example, I'm quite friendly with the priests and pastors that come to the hospital to conduct services for the old folks. I tell them I'm RO because they seem like nice people and I don't feel like getting into a heated exchange with them.
You should tell all the gay-marriage and abortion protestors that.
