I've read pretty interesting article yesterday on rebel's site; it's quite lengthy, so I'll use the on-line translator to speed things up a bit ( I'll try to fix automatic translation as much as possible, so that it would be still understandable)
"The betrayal of Novorossiya is already impossible."
According to the last opinion poll of Levada Center, the majority of Russians (65%) watch closely the events in Ukraine. 59% of respondents consider that our state should actively support the South-East of the country. 64% approve the help to the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk republics provided by Russian volunteers. Thus, results of research clearly speak about support by the majority of Russians of a resistance movement.
On the other hand, poll data testifies and the opinions of Russians almost completely coincide with official coverage of events in Ukraine by Russian media. 91% of respondents admitted that they receive information from the neighboring country from the tv for the most part, and 79% consider a presented picture to be objective. So here comes the question whether the opinions of the Russian public change, if Russian media will change the coverage of events and will start present it differntly? We already see the first signs of it.
While only several weeks ago our television was reporting mostly about the success of the rebels during their fights with Kiev's security officers, by now the emphasis is made on a sympathy to victims of the punitive operation and to refugees. If earlier in tone of the voice of the news reporters speaking about non-recognition by Moscow of the new power in Ukraine was full of resolution, nowadays the conciliatory notes concerning the "peaceful plans" of Poroshenko are already heard. The notes that the most important thing here is already to stop the violence. While this message has been conveyed, it leaves out the fact that the ideas of Novorossiya's for which the rebels of Donbass are fightning for, initially implied the development of a wide resistance to Kiev throughout the whole Southeast of Ukraine.
The Novorossiya project assumes not only creation of a certain territorial enclave where Russian language will receive the official status, but the creation of a state with more social justice. The state, where the natural resources and sizable financial assets created by people's labor would be the property of people of Novorossiya. ( They can't be privatized.) "Money are not goods, they can be only used for exchange of the goods, The loan interest is a method of an enslavement of the enterprise and it serves as means for unfair redistribution of resources in favor of the usurer (bank)", – as one of the leaders of resistance Pavel Gubarev defines the contours of the social order of Novorossiya. The leaders of the Donetsk People's Republic already made the decision to increase pensions, maintenance allowance for students and raise salaries to those who live on a budget ( mostly state employees - teachers and so on.) While in Ukraine starting from July 1 the increase of 70%-100% in cost of utilities is expected, the DNR is making a decision to freeze it at the level of 2013.
Obviously these kind of ideas are not going to be popular with Russian oligarchs. Therefore it is possible to assume that our billionaires will make an effort to not allow this project ( Novorossya) to be realized this way. They will want to conduct "peaceful negotiations" ( with Poroshenko.) Under the current conditions this position will mean only waste of time for the rebels and the opportunity for the Ukrainian army to regroup and to reinforce itself.
However - will the change of media presentation influence the opinion of Russians, their support for the rebels of Donbass?
( Then two political observers argue two different points of view, one is saying that if the media will do everything correctly, the Russians will like to see their country supporting "peaceful resolution," while the other one is saying that this is not going to work and Russian public will not buy it, since this project already became important to them as idea of national unity and idea of social justice that they lack home, the project void of the corruption of the 90ies. )"

So it remains to be seen whether public opinion in Russia will change on the matter or not, and whether Putin will want to risk his popularity after Crimea.
So far the rebels receive a lot of material/military support from average Russians, not just government.
