Everyone looks mediocre when compared to the present-day SEC.

... Which seems to be a large part of the problem, that the members of a conference like the ACC are measuring the success of the conference against the earth-shattering success of a football juggernaut like the SEC.

A move to Charlotte seems to be a ‘smoke-and-mirrors’ move intended to attempt to placate the multiple ACC member schools unhappy with both the conference’s unsatisfactory television deal with ESPN (which the ACC is locked into through 2036) and with the conference’s inadequate financial performance when compared to the SEC and the Big Ten and even the Pac 12.

But on the other hand, going to your point about mediocre football programs (including underperforming ACC football programs like Miami, FSU, VT, UNC, BC, NC State, Louisville, etc.), being much more consistent and winning many more football games over the past several years likely could have helped to significantly improve the ACC’s financial bottom line to the point of maybe having a better TV deal and more revenue.

The ACC has had more football success than any not named the SEC in the last decade. 3 of the last 8 champions, 2 teams in the top 4 last year. The ACC suffers from smaller fan bases compared to the B10. There simply is more money to be had there. The one shot the ACC has is utilizing their one unquestioned asset (college basketball) into more money. Using the ACC Network to better monetize it is a start. But they also need to seriously push some reformation of March Madness, which at the moment is the main source of revenue for the entirety of the NCAA. Whether that means a breakaway or simply a less equitable distribution, I don’t know. But hopefully the ACC is spending time on those issues, as this hq stuff is a nothingburger. No school will be more likely to stay because of it. And as Texas/OK show, it’s all about program retention for those conferences outside the Big 2.

In the long run, that very well could happen. I'd expect 3 or 4 larger conferences with the best of the ACC and Big 12 being brought into the SEC/Big 10.

If the best of the ACC defects.... the ACC is done ...like the old Southern Conference.
Jim Phillips has his hands full and it has nothing to do with Greensboro ....or Charlotte for that matter.

Hypothetically speaking if Duke and Carolina bolted the ACC is done.

Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Louisville go to the PAC-12. Duke, UNC, UVA, ND to the Big 10. VPI, NC State, Pitt, and BC to the SEC. Syracuse, Wake, and Miami to the AAC or the Sun Belt. That should do it. Maybe flip Ga Tech and ND, because the Big 10 loves the AAU schools.. which ND isn't a part of.

So you don't think NC State would follow Duke and UNC?

Not to mention Wake....hard to see The Big Four breaking up.

The Big 10 wouldn't want NC State.... 1) it isn't an AAU school and 2) if it has Duke and UNC.... no need to add another NC school. The ACC schools that are a part of the AAU are Duke, UNC, UVA, Georgia Tech, and Pitt. Pitt doesn't add a new market, so the Big 10 wouldn't have any use for them... so Duke, UVA, UNC, and Ga Tech would be the top options... unless they go against an unwritten policy and invite a ND a non-AAU school.
