I live inside the traffic box and I can't wait until this is over. I have no idea why anyone ever thought hosting an event like this in center city was a good idea. Milan apparently did it out at some airstrip. Philly should have taken their cue from that.

Eh, maybe because it has happened before although it was decades before all the post 9/11 security measures.

Personally I don't think the predicted number is going to show up. I live on the northern border of the traffic box so I can appreciate your concerns.

Is it working? Has anyone been dumb, or desperate, enough to pay those prices? Last I heard there were still hotel rooms available right in the heart of Center City.

Not that I know of, I would hope not with Google Maps and all.

Demand has been a lot lower then they expected, and they have not been able to fetch the price that many were hoping for either. So many people have listed their places on AirBnb and Craigslist for insane amounts of money, $9k for the week for a house in Cherry Hill. People are off their rocker if they think they will get anywhere near that.

I thought this was kind of an interesting article about people re-selling Pope tickets: We emailed everyone selling Pope tickets on Craigslist; 12 people responded :: News :: Philadelphia City Paper

The part that really jumped out at me was Mayor Michael Nutter's quote:

Quote:
"Pope Francis comes to Philadelphia to speak on ... immigration and religious freedom, and you get a free ticket and then throw it up on a site and try to sell it and that's — in the neighborhood where I grew up — that's trifling, just trifling," Nutter said. "I mean, that's just wrong."
I like Nutter a lot—I think he's a great mayor—but this comment from him really annoyed me. He seems completely oblivious to the fact that not everyone in Philly was indoctrinated into the Catholic church from an early age like he was. Not everyone cares about the Pope or wants to be inconvenienced by his visit. What's "trifling" is blocking off public property from tax-paying philadelphians so that a religious figure can have a private event on them. What's "trifling" is closing public schools for half a week for this religious event. What's "trifling" is creating financial hardships for low-income hourly workers because this religious event is impeding their ability to get to work. If people want to to scalp these tickets, so what. At least someone is getting some compensation from the attendees for the problems their event is causing.

yeah well it isn't about being "indoctrinated in the church", its about not being a piece of trash with no morals like the people who tried to make money off of a free religious event. Maybe having respect for someone else and not being selfish is beyond most people.

Also "What's "trifling" is creating financial hardships for low-income hourly workers because this religious event is impeding their ability to get to work." is a ridiculous statement.. What a terrible thing to have to take the bus to a different subway stop.
