On the corner? It's hard to tell what that is. It doesn't enlarge enough to really see it.

ETA: Ok, I saw the photo.

I'm catching up on old posts and this one got my attention:

Next to Max's was Western Honda and then Burger Chef next to it. They built Bud Beck Pontiac across from the Papago Inn around 66 I suppose. Up towards the papago buttes was a strip center with Pizza Pub and the polynesian style Dairy Queen which last I went by there was an Avis car rental or something.

One day in the early 70's I went to Pizza Pub for lunch and was standing in line behind a bunch of car mechanics from the nearby dealerships.

They all looked like you'd expect for a mechanic who'd been working all morning--grease-stained, wrinkled uniforms that said something like "Pete, Bud Beck Pontiac, Alignment Specialist."

All except one, that is. He was wearing a spotless, pressed uniform that could have just come from the dry cleaner, along with shiny European-looking leather shoes and an impeccably groomed moustache. His shirt said "Andreas, Max of Switzerland, Certified Rolls Royce Technician."

First pizza I ever had... Burger Chef nearby was another favorite.

Default Who Remembers the Playboy Club

I know it opened in 1962, but my first visit there was in 1976. Eighteen (18) years old, having moved to Arizona for College, I was working for Radio Shack, and they decided to have their Christmas Party at The Playboy Club. Having been raised in a very remote part of Northern California, this was quite the experience. I tried not to stare, really I did

I applied for a busboy job there when I was 19 (remember the 19 cards...!?), it being the legal age to be around booze (serve/handle) at the time.
I didn't get a job there but I do remember the elevator ride up/down the west side of the building overlooking Central Ave ("look, Park Central is across the street...whoops, now it's down there..."). May've had a small case of vertigo.

I bought a new Renault from Max, didn't like it and tried to return it. Max said he didn't want it back, he had a whole lot full of them!

How do you remember Phoenix? Stories from long time residents...-max.jpg

I bought a used, broken Renault Daulphine when I was a teenager. It was cute but the engine was baaad so I bought a used low mileage engine at a Phoenix junk yard. It had very low miles, they said, and it ws a fortune for me to pay. One I installed it we found it had a really weak cylinder and oil fouled that spark plug constantly. That was the end of my Renault endeavors and dealing with that particular junk yard. I sold it for scrap.

Did anyone ever own a NSU Prinz or perhaps a Gogomobile? I guess I went for the really weird stuff.

I also owned a Dauphine with the push button transmission; piece of junk, the shifting transformer went out because it was too close to the engine and got hot plus a lot of parts on top the engine were plastic and just broke off.

I knew a student at ASU who got a Le Car from Renault when he graduated from Sunnyslope. It was an embarrassing piece of junk with the bold "Le Car" graphics on the side. Nothing one would ever want to cruise Central in. Or, for that matter, be seen in. The engine leaked oil from the front seal from day 1. He traded it in on a used VW Dasher after only 3 or 4 months.

The link below shows a representative of that finely-engineered automotive design.
