I like that bottle. Nice colors! I heard the land in that area had a high water table many years ago.I've never been quite certain about that but with increased pumping of water the water level is certainly way, way down now.

I used to monitor water levels for the City and after those massive floods some areas near 91st Avenue and the "normally dry" Salt River bed. We had water only 13'-17' below the surface. The City had to develop a number of high volume wells to lower that water level to protect in ground tanks and building basements in the area. We pumped many millions of gallons of water from the ground aquifer into the Salt River bed.

Very cool, I live in the area now and didn't realize that was a separate municipality back then. What was the drive-in theater that is on the west side of the map? I'm trying to remember.

A random series of clicks on YouTube and I stumbled upon this video: file footage of Phoenix allegedly from the 50s. Check it out and see if you remember anything shown. Great shots of the downtown streets and other locations.

What a great find! Of course, many of the buildings shown are still there, some under different names and looking different on the outside. Michael's Jewelers is still there on Central. 50's certainly looks about right. Makes me wonder what the original purpose of the film(s) was/were. In a couple of cases, the camera focuses closely on the entrance to a building (one of them twice) but never pans back to show us what they were. Those are the only buildings I don't have some reference point for. Love the shots of the old airport terminal and the old tower.

Thanks!!

Thanks for finding that, Bondurant!

I'm pretty sure the building shown at 04:26 (the time visible on the video, not the you-tube time) is the old fire station at the southeast corner of 24th street and Roosevelt, but it could have been a common architectural design for Phoenix fire stations.

I ran across this recently, an updated page with a lot of old Phoenix photos and maps and memorabilia, from Brad Hall, the graphic designer for Valley National Banks (including some photos from my old boss, Bob Markow). Click on the images to bring up large sizes.

Morrissey - My Love Life - YouTube

A Morrissey video from the 1980s(?) where he and his band just drive around Van Buren and downtown Phoenix in a convertible (the requirements for music videos were much less in those days) - you can see a lot of old motels that no longer exist, like the Kon Tiki.

About the videos: The vintage film panning of the motor pool at the sheriff's department (at the beginning of the video, 0:07) shows several 1958/1959 Ford Fairlanes or Galaxies (look more like Fairlanes), so I'm guessing 1959. My parents had a 1959 Fairlane, kept it until the mid 70s. It was my first ride ever, from St. Joseph's.

The Morrissey video was shot in the early fall of 1991. I dropped my wife off at Sky Harbor that day and was heading to Deer Valley to visit a friend and saw that video being filmed at around 44th and Van Buren. There was even a blurb about it in the New Times the next week. What a find that video is! Thanks, AZ Mike!
