Does anyone remember any Phoenix motel having a "waver"? It was a life size figure of a person and one arm had a light bulb. The arm moved back and forth, beckoning weary travelers in. There was a bellboy or maybe it was a bell captain, a Heidi, a chef and several others I cannot remember. We restored one of the bellboys and I always wondered where it might have come from.
I have a recollection of that (a vague one) but have no idea where it was.

A great photo of Phoenix Stadium with the Luhr's tower and KTAR antennas in the distance. This is the opening game between the Indians and the Yankees in 1951.

That would be the Phoenix Municipal Stadium located at Central Avenue and Mojave, I suppose. My school, grades 1-6 was just a couple of short blocks away. At that time the NY Giants did spring training there. We would sometimes wander over and watch the Giants. The gates were open. In those days people like Willie Mays would talk to us kids and sign stuff. A friend was their bat boy and kept all the cracked Louisville Slugger bats with autographs. We would wait for the foul balls to come flying out across Mohave St. I think we sold them for $1.00 or maybe it was fifty cents.

It's all gone now. Great picture that brings a lot of distant memories back.

Yes, I used to work at Pepino's Patio. Was reviewing my 1965 tax return today and found my W2 from there. Busboy. $1.00 per hour. Nice staff. I was a not so good worker.

Default More about Art Brock

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but he was also the inventor of the "Brock-a-brella" hat. He wore it infrequently during his weather show. My dad, ever the serious one, thought he (Art Brock) was funny. And if it was good enough for my dad, it was certainly good enough for me...

The great St. Louis Cardinal baseballer Lou Brock invented the hat, and still holds the patent on it. I can remember seeing him wearing one when he was broadcasting years ago.

omg. what about LL Smith and Tg& y was a favorite and Skaggs was best for ice cream cones. And AJ Bayless groceries store. 35th and Bethany or shall I say 35th and rose lane. I lived on 31st and Marlette and my best friend was Patti Snapp.
What a fun time we used to have walking to the store through the field behind the church. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Sun City Sales Brochure, early 1960's. Low prices but salaries were a lot different then too. Some of these homes have now been owned by 4-5 owners.

New member here. Not a Phoenix native but lived here 57 years.
In reply to a discussion from a couple years ago, I remember Herman Spoot. He was on a show called "Easy Does It" (I think) on Ch. 12. Easy, the host, was Gene McKinney (sp?). I don't know what his previous position was at 12. My mom remembered that it was sort of a "thinking-man's kids show", as some of the humor was topical and way over kids' heads. Based on where we lived at the time, the show would have been on in 1957-1958.

Here is another view of Sun City. The full circle drives are a nightmare because they have continuous house numbers completely around the circle. You never know where to start or which direction you are driving.
