I hear you, I just don't understand why someone would put themselves in that situation and then complain about it.

My lack of insight? What the hell are you talking about? This is simple math here. If you don't have money, don't have kids. Is this really that complicated?

I'm simply countering your argument that telling people not to have kids is somehow equivalent to telling people not to breath. That makes no sense.

What if you already have kids and then things go downhill for some reason or other (economy, health, etc.). What are you supposed to do with the kids you already have? When the economy tanked, we went through our savings while frantically searching for jobs AND running a small business. Had we had children, what do you think we should have done with them when we got those lovely $9/hr temp jobs?

Everyone is not starting from zero, do you realize that? You sound young, with facile answers to complex questions. With time comes the realization that everyone is not like you, and that's not a bad thing, and that situations are much more complex than they appear on the face of it.

I do not think folks like you are who people are talking about.

I guess the answer for them is to not have children unless you have enough money in the bank to support them through the age of 18, no matter what happens. These same people are part of a crowd that says "be fruitful and multiply." I guess that this only applies to a chosen few. Perhaps there should be a committee who approves whether or not a person should have a child or not...oh wait that would be making the government bigger. As always...damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I really can't stand the judgement passing, holier than thou crowd who thinks that they are more responsible and deserving than everyone else when the truth is that they are in the same boat as many others and are a pay check away from poverty, just like the working poor.

Well, they said "poor" which encompasses all poor people no matter how they go there.

Poor folks are poor because they are stupid and/or lazy. If one is not stupid and/or lazy, one does not stay poor.

Case in point.

Dumb poor person: "Holy Smokes! child care is getting expensive..whine whine etc.

Bright/Lazy poor person: "Holy Smokes! child care is getting expensive, I could open a day care". My kids stay free and I make money.... naw too much work plus the man is holding me down excuse, excuse etc.

Bright/Non-Lazy poor person: "Holy Smokes! child care is getting expensive, I will open a day care". "My kids stay free and I make money." (never mind, this person doesn't exist)

This thread is about childcare.

How many still use childcare for 18 years???

Who said that poor people stay poor? Who said that poor people were always poor? People can become poor by losing a job, a death in the family or some other unforseen circumstance. Poor is not permanent and doesn't mean someone is stupid and lazy. Are middle class people who live beyond their means and go into debt stupid and lazy too? Also, stupid and lazy aren't one in the same. There are genuises living in card board boxes and hard working idiots. Seeing the world through such a narrow view indicates a small brain capacity and a very limited life experience.

If it isn't child care, there are other things to complain about and other costs involved with having children and I paid for childcare in some form until my children were 11 if you really want to harp on that point. Then after that, there are still summer activities/camps and the cost of other things like food and clothes increase as they get bigger. I was referring to the over all cost of raising a child but thanks for reminding me what the thread was about .

"Poor" is a very elastic term.

Suffice it to say, someone who has kids and falls on some hard times is a universe away from someone who is unmarried, unskilled, and little prosperity.

The former was doing fine and most likely will do so again. The latter was never doing fine and added a kid to the list of impediments.
