I've got a perfect technological fix the problem of phonong or texting while driving use the cell phones, smart phone, Blackberry or iPads GPS capability to detect if it is being used while it is moving at a speed of 25 miles or greater. If it is then have the device automatically phone or contact the state Dept of Motor Vehicles or similar agency and they issue a a 50 0r 100 dollar citation. Even the stupidest of us will get the message.

I guess people who die in accidents cause by drivers using CELL PHONES wouldn't understand your point either.

People shouldn't use their phones while driving, period. How many times have you almost been sideswiped, only to look over at the other driver and see them yakking away at the phone? I can count four or five times in the last year alone.

Politicizing this issue is stupid. So is the anti-business rationale for doing so.

Yeah let's have the government just mailing fines to people, because of course it's about safety.

No cell phones on the train? No cell phones as a passenger? That will go over real well.

Look I am not a huge fan of cell phone use while driving. I rarely do it, maybe 3-4 times per year. I don't even like cell phone use while walking--I am constantly having to dodge oblivious cell-phone users with their heads down while jogging in the park

But this bogus initiative is all about collecting fine revenue. Surely even you libs can see that...?

Somebody should post a graph of the proliferation of cell phones since 1995 on one axis and the non-alcohol vehicle fatalities on the other.

Huh?

Telling your wife/husband you're stuck in traffic or asking them what you need to pick up on the way home is "productive?"

Wow, as always, you learn something new on C-D.

One would have to control for increased automobile safety when doing the calculation that trapper suggests.

Cell phone use while driving is a state issue and the federal government should stay out of it per the 10th Amendment.
