I just don't understand this rush to all EV's. What is going to happen in the used car market? There are so many families that flat out cannot afford a $50,000 + car so they turn to used. A gas powered used car that still has plenty of life left in it can be had for say $5000 BUT with EV's all those inexpensive cars that so many rely on will require a $10,000+ new battery. Suddenly that cheap car that someone could actually save up to buy has pushed them into getting a loan for the new battery in the same car.
Another major issue with these besides where all the power is going to come from to charge them is where will all these cars park while charging? Not everyone has a garage/driveway. Not every business has a large enough parking lot for all the employee EV's to charge up. A gasoline powered car takes 5 minutes to fill up with fuel and that includes getting a cup of coffee. The EV is going to take 30 minutes + to charge up. Will we be seeing lines of cars waiting for the charging station?
EV's certainly have their place on the roads but forcing people into them is going to force a lot more people onto the bus.
Banning gas powered car sales by 2035 sounds good but in real life it is a stupid idea.
I wonder how many Californians will buy a gas powered car and register it to a home address out of state, like using a South Dakota PO Box to get a SD plate on their car. How can California stop you from using your car if it is registered to your "home" in South Dakota.
Now, if they shut down all the gas stations, that is a whole different issue.
I can't wait until electric cars and trucks are as practical as gasoline powered cars, but the government should not put a gun to our heads and make us buy the current crop of impractical and high priced EVs. We probably need a revolution in battery technology as well. A world full of used lithium batteries sounds physically and environmentally dangerous to me.
There is a lot I like about EVs. Boat loads of torque. Less moving parts. Far less maintenance. Quiet. No energy consumption when stopped. I am looking forward to when they finally become as practical as gas powered vehicles. They are not even close to that yet.
California is expected to approve a ban on sales of fossil fueled automobiles tomorrow. The ban will be in full effect (none) by 2035 and fractionally as soon as 2026. California becomes the first government in the world to go this far. It's pretty interesting in that it will create a huge market for EV manufacturers, will likely catch on and spread, and will require some serious efforts to meet the electrical demand of these new vehicles.
People will just travel to the next state and buy their cars. There will be hundreds of dealers right over the line willing to take their money.
Yep. People will still have a need for long distance family haulers. Big SUVs and minivans for road trips. Nobody wants to use EVs for that. Same for the gas powered lawn equipment they're banning too, people will just go out of state to buy it.
