For those of you who are against any sort of electric vehicles, you do realize that this has happened many times through history, right?
1. Engines replacing horse and buggies
2. Printing presses replacing scribes
3. Robots replacing factory workers
4. Diesel and electric trains replacing steam locomotives
I would imagine that within 20yr, the majority of passenger vehicles will be electric. As technology catches up, electric vehicles will become cheaper and become more efficient.
Think about cell phones from 20yr ago compared to today's phones.
People will just travel to the next state and buy their cars. There will be hundreds of dealers right over the line willing to take their money.
And California will make sure to double tax those people who try to register those cars in the state.
For the people saying how are the working class going to afford these EVs... well I think that's the point. They aren't supposed to. The whole "you will own nothing and be happy" thing. Those who can't afford EVs will be taking public transit or ordering their ride shares.

You won't be able to register your gas powered car in CA without a legal residence address in one of the other 49 states. Alaska and Hawaii might be a stretch.
California is expected to approve a ban on sales of fossil fueled automobiles tomorrow. The ban will be in full effect (none) by 2035 and fractionally as soon as 2026. California becomes the first government in the world to go this far. It's pretty interesting in that it will create a huge market for EV manufacturers, will likely catch on and spread, and will require some serious efforts to meet the electrical demand of these new vehicles.
Is the ban on ALL gasoline or diesel powered cars? Or just NEW ones?

But Google said that the article contained this language (emphasis mine):

No new sales. Gas cars owned in 2034 will be grandfathered in, so it is a phasing in of electric only.
Knowing California, they will eventually refuse to register ANY gasoline powered cars after a certain date, like 2050. Remember "cash for clunkers"? Eventually, all gas powered cars will be banned or else all gas sales will be banned.
The rich will still have their gas powered toys under some kind of "exemption" where you pay some exhobitant fee and call your old Ferrari "historic" or "classic" or something.
All of this presumes the ability to charge all of these cars. California will find that is impossible and will have to live with older gas powered cars just so that all the BEVs don't completely overwhelm the electric supply.

They are pretty much banned if you cannot register your vehicle.
