Soooo glad Orange County did not approve Butt-ees. They can go do that somewhere else. Not a fan of mega gas stations.
I think it reeks of elitism or something. At the very least a little bit of Nimbyism that got mixed with broader aesthetic and political leanings of Orange County.
I mean seriously, it isn't as if they're putting it on Franklin Street or next to the Botannical Garden.
It's at an exit off the interstate. And it wasn't going to be the next HQ for a tech firm, or anything "better" than a gas station.
Folks lecture about climate change and the future of fossil fuels and look down on cashiers and custodians, even though Buc-ee’s living wage jobs, with vacation and benefits, are double the income of the average Efland resident. Efland was once a thriving rural community with a bank, post office, and other businesses. Now its an Exxon station and a little grill.

It's a massive gas station. It's disgusting. NIMBYism is a real problem here, but I don't think this was related to just nimbys. I'm far from a nimby and I hated this potential project. It's a massive gas station. It's disgusting.

So is a Costco, but that doesn't mean they don't have their place or clientele.
$17-$18 an hour is not some princely sum. Maybe for that type of work it is better than average, but still is not worth incentives or giving them anything special. (Honestly there’s a strong argument even much higher paying jobs shouldn’t but that’s a big debate for another day) If they couldn’t make the deal work within the confines of the rules everyone else has to play by then so be it. Buc-ees should have done better research about the political and economic conditions for their site and come up with a better proposal. Instead they chose not to address concerns that were brought up during the rezoning process. Probably because with so many people stanning for them so hard they figured the board would just give them anything. They are a for profit business.
As I mentioned before, giving them tons in incentives would be silly bit I can't find what they were asking for.
My post was directed at those clutching their pearls over a gas station. Instead of thinking of them as "just a gas station", they should be looked at as a good employer providing decent jobs. It might not be much to many/most on these boards, but for many a Buc-EE's job with the opportunity to earn $35-40K/year with a comprehensive benefits package (vs $11-12/hr for "part time" work as provided by many gas stations and retail stores) could be life changing.
But again, I'm not saying the county should have jumped through massive financial hurdles... just that Buc-EE's is more than just a simple gas station.

Clarifying my earlier comment, my understanding is that they were NOT asking for incentives in Mebane (I think they were told no chance in Orange County) but were seeking incentives along I-95, similar to what they’ve received in Georgia, Florida, Alabama and (I think) South Carolina.

You’re not the only one who feels this way. I think some of the backlash toward Buc-ee’s is rooted in pompousness. FFS, The guy behind ‘A voice for Efland and Orange’ literally complained about how tacky their billboards were!
If a store like Wegmans, Costco, or IKEA comes, you wouldn’t see half as many complaints about how excessive or unneeded they are (and unpopular opinion: neither of those chains are necessities either). It’s amazing how one Buc-ee’s is the end of the world, but we can celebrate 75 Wawas coming.

To be fair, there's a lot of overlap between those complaining about Buc-ee's and those complaining about WaWa.
But in the chain of convenience stores/gas stations:

7-11 < Sheetz < WaWa <Buc-ee's
At least IMO.
I believe there’s some overlap, but there’s still a segment of people that wants Wawa, but doesn’t want Buc-ee’s for some reason.
- EV chargers (but a couple of Buc-ee’s have Tesla chargers)
- People not wanting NC to be like Texas
- People who think NC is ‘Sheetz’ or QT territory.
- Aforementioned argument about the store’s size
