Probably because MOST women wouldn't laugh at Matt Serra. For that, she might get a little "feedback". Those types of women are used to pansy men taking their crap. Ignoring her won't work. It just shows your a weakling all the more.
Most women at the gym aren't serious trainers. The gym is a perfectly legit place to talk to women. Women go there hoping to meet men, just like men go there hoping to meet women.
OP, it's not all about being buff. It's about personality. Don't put all your self-esteem eggs in one basket. It sounds a little as if you think you need to be big and muscle-bound in order to attract the women you want, I don't know if that's accurate. You also seem to have very narrow criteria as to who you're attracted to. You might have better luck if you'd cast a wider net.

Women wear sexy workout outfits for a reason. They want to get men's attention. Even in the more low-key gyms, they're a great place to socialize. The gym tends to turn up over and over on these threads on people's lists of recommended places to meet people.

I can't even do that at my gym. It's not co-ed so no worries. The off days don't have powerlifter loudmouths either. They are hot women trying to loose a few pounds and keep their sexy shape. That woman is probably a b**** to those girls too. Hang on ladies, I'll knock her down a few stairs for you too!
Women wear "sexy" outfits probably to move around freely in. If you want to meet people at the gym, go to the socialization events they have. Most gyms have those at least once a month.
If you are going to keep interrupting people's training, you will keep getting these types of comebacks.
Women wear sexy clothese for any one of a thousand reasons, and not a single one of them is a license for a man to assume she's available.

Workouts have natural breaks in them when you're moving from one machine to another, or waiting for someone to finish on a machine so you can take a turn. There's plenty of opportunity to chat without interrupting. Some gyms have juice bars that provide additional opportunity for socializing. Gyms tend to be a popular singles venue.
