There should not be any reason to "call around".

OP..did you get a marriage license before you got married ?

How To Get A Marriage License In North Carolina

If you're headed down the aisle in North Carolina, you'll need a marriage license. You can get one by filing an application with a County Register of Deeds Office.

You'll both need to appear at the clerk's office, fill out an application, sign it, and pay a license fee, usually $60. You can get your marriage license immediately (there isn't a waiting period).
I'm starting to think they got the license and he told her it was the legal document marrying them.

She would have been there and seen the document. She also would have had to sign it and show proof of ID and SS.

She's excited and signing something without reading it. You honestly can't see her being confused about this?

Well now getting a license and getting married are 2 separate events done by 2 separate departments in the NC government. And yes, she should know.

Yeah, I think if you followed her posts over the years you wouldn't be surprised that she may not realize this.

Well she's been confused by less confusing things than this. And she's obviously confused if she told everyone she was married and is now saying she doesn't feel she is.

Where was the disconnect if she's not confused about something??

Same here is Pennsylvania. It's called a "self-uniting wedding license" (colloquially known as a "Quaker wedding license").

All that's needed to make things "official" is the signatures of the couple who's being married plus those of two witnesses--no clergy, judge, or magistrate need be present. All that must be done afterward is to file the license with the appropriate government entity to make things official in the eyes of the law.

That's true in Colorado, too. No ceremony, just sign the appropriate papers at the county clerk office.
