You'd be surprised how just one homicide in a decade's time changes how people think and act.

Part of the worry about crime here is the same basic concern as with fire risk -- response time is many, many minutes (up to an hour in the north country), so you really have to be ready to be your own first responder.
This is so true.

Not only are criminals mobile, there are fewer people around in rural areas to see what they do.

Surveillance and recording devices help fill in the observation gap. And they do not need to be fed, poop cleaned up, taken to vets, or trained NOT to bark indiscriminately. Which, as many blotters in all areas show, can cause serious conflicts. We can hear a dog barking from over a mile away, without listening for it. Sound carries far, depending on terrain and vegetation.

Dogs are a cheap man's alarm.

This is so true with barking dogs now that the leaves are all off of the trees. I can even see Missouri now through the trees.

There is a new house being built down the street from me and a lot of vehicles turn around at our street. I will start arming my security system now even when taking short trips. I also relocated one of my two game cameras to see this intersection.

I remember my mom talking about a dog they once had that liked to howl at the moon. When the nearest neighbor complained (I believe a half-mile away), the dog had to go.

Same here but true also for bigger pets and even livestock such as horses.

On the flip side, some dogs harass or kill livestock, which is about guaranteed to get those dogs shot.

Bottom line: Having a dog warn of intruders is good IF it is trained and IF it stays on the owner’s property and IF the owner takes good care of it. But keeping one as a substitute for devices isn’t necessary.

Stick with Rottweiler breed. They have great natural instincts for this kind of protection

Rotties are good dogs (only bad owners, no bad dogs).

Mine is a Rhodesian Ridgeback / pittie mix. 98 lbs.
