I hate how some people make it out to be like it’s super below average. “Arctic April”? Come on, that’s an exaggeration. We’re only 2 degrees below average in Albany, along with other areas in the northeast this month so far. Actually, Philadelphia is .7 above average so far in April. So how is it a “Arctic April” for them?
I get what you're saying regarding calling the "whole month" Arctic April but a Few points...
I get that but the whole month is still .7 degrees above average according to the NWS for Philadelphia. Half the month is not a full month. Thus, I wouldn’t say “Arctic April” like that women said in that tweet. Maybe less than normal April for most areas in the Northeast. Really, the Midwest I think has been more below average than us. But I think to classify as Arctic April we would need anomalies in the 5 or more below normal degree range for the whole month. Again, this April has not really been that cold. May might start below average but I bet it goes above average by mid May. Temperatures will probably increase a little more unevenly this year, with a big jump by mid May happening for the Northeast when the ridge comes back with a trough in the west. It’s looking like that might happen.
Really nice day here in northern England. Mostly sunny with a few white clouds and temperatures around 15°C (59°F). Feeling a little chilly in the shade but warm in the sunshine.
Looks to be going downhill for the rest of the week though – with showers or longer spells of rain and temperatures in the low double digits. Can’t complain though given the excellent months weather that we’ve had. By the weekend it looks to be turning a little warmer but still unsettled.
Got only 2.8mm of rain so far in Sheffield, and looks like tomorrow onwards could ruin the very dry streak, what a shame. Would have been nice to get a record dry month in. But I can't complain about the month as it's been very sunny, mild and dry. Could be one of the sunniest on record.

Yup. Currently sat on the patio soaking up the last rays of sunshine before the sun goes to bed - and will it likely stay in bed for the next few days at least. Currently 14°C and still pleasantly warm in the sun - warm enough for shorts and a t-shirt though chilly in the shade.
Out of 115 yrs of records, only 2 were colder than 2020 for April 15-26 period in Hartford.
Last time was this cold for 2nd half of April was in 1956! 1956! So nobody younger than 64 yrs old has experienced this cold for 2nd half of April!!
For Bridgeport, CT, April 15-26, 2020 was the coldest since 1983 with a 45.2° Avg temp.. 3rd coldest for the period on record. 40s again today

In complete contrast, here in the UK we are currently having one of our warmest Aprils on record! The mean central England temperature is currently standing at 11.0°C (approx 52°F). Over 3 degrees C above the 1960-1991 average! Only April 2011 was warmer at 11.8°C (approx 54°F).
I already have hanging baskets out. Those cold waves are not going to be that cold. Just colder than average so each cold blast will be warmer than the last as we head into May. As far as I see here near Albany, NY, we had our last frost a few nights ago. Probably won’t be going below freezing again until October. So planting is just fine here. The garden starts usually mid May when soil temps reach into the 60’s more for us.

We never get such contrasts here in the UK.
You also have to consider that we span ocean to ocean and cover 24° of latitude in addition, we're like a condensed version of Europe and Asia in one country
