"Awesome" is really irritating to me and has gained a lot of popularity. Wouldn't be so bad if used when something was really and truly awesome. Or awe inspiring.

"That's nice."

Surely one of the more irritating blowoff phrases there is!

When someone says "I know" after you tell them something...like did I just waste my breathe?

I participate on a message board where we deliberately use "that's nice" in lieu of another two-word phrase, the second word being "you".

"Awful" used to mean that (awe-inspiring). Now it means something quite different.

A lot of Hispanics are Caucasians! And the african americans? That classification is really heavy. Maybe is easy for you... but from Europe we can't understand it because there are different factors into one definition.
Races are races. Why don't you use their main chararacteristics?... Or not using anything? I think it's just a hypocritical social attitude.
The funniest part there is when someone refers to Nelson Mandela as a 'courageous African American'. Or when an immigrant Afrikaner high school student in Nebraska applies for a scholarship for African Americans, and gets kicked out of school for it.

This is an entertaining thread. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks certain phrases are totally irritating.

I can't stand "first and foremost" Ugh. I once worked with a guy who used it six times in a welcome speech to all of our new hires. Really, six! It all can't be first and foremost! I had SUCH a hard time keeping myself composed!

And another one: Since President Obama first came on the scene (not to get political and I love Obama), but he had the slightly unusual way of using the word "Look"...as in "Look. We're not talking about...yada yada yada"...I have noticed since that time many people who we are used to hearing speak on tv, etc. have incorporated that into their speech patterns...I find that irritating. Go find your own "catch phrase"...LOL

There's an acronym that came originally from the world of sports: KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) Applying this formula, another phrase that irritates me no end is...

At the present time.

I guess it's too difficult to say, simply, now.
