So now I will ask you the following. I see where your numbers come from. 20,000 people inside the arena, plus 35,000 more which would put 55,000 into the stadium. Makes sense. So how is it that 65,000 "community credential" holders will be shut out of the event. Add the 20,000 people that can go and we end up with 85,000 ticket holders.
This suggests one of two things. Either the DNC is so incompetant they can't do simple math, or more likely they made up a cover story about the weather in very short notice and didn't think it out. I go with the latter.

Oh and by the way your original post did not have a question mark at the end of that sentence, which is part of the reason I asked you to clarify.
They had to call it early - and based on Monday's & Tuesday's showers, they made the right call for the information they had at the time.

And had they waited until today, and those thousands of folks who paid for bus tickets and rode hours to get here were turned away if it *did* storm? No way they could have waited. People were planning on traveling HOURS to be here, a decision needed to be made.
Calling things off early due to expected bad weather and then the weather is fine? OMG, that has never happened in Charlotte before! The snot-nosed little bas***** get days off almost every year because of school cancellations that are made in advance of expected storms.
This is just another case of damned if you do, damned if you don't. If they didn't call due to weather and the attendees got poured on, the RNC would be saying how the President doesn't care about people getting colds.

One could counter that easily by saying that people are so anxious to see Obama they would endure the pouring rain for it. He did after all have an outdoor inauguration with many events in 20 degree weather. My guess is the RNC would say a little as possible about a stadium completely filled with Obama supporters.
I still say it was canceled at the last moment because they couldn't fill up the place and image is more important than anything else.

Oh, I'm sure people would have shown up if fire was raining down. You seem to have more faith in people than I do. Republicans will bad mouth Democrats no matter what and the Dems will do the same thing. It's all about the spin these days. Maybe it always was and I just notice a lot more now.

And yes, you are entitled to this opinion.
