As for Atlanta. They do have a greater influence over more parts of the South than DFW/Houston/MFD/ and DC does. DC has Virginia and maybe the extreme Southern parts of North Carolina. Miami's sphere doesn't leave Florida and it overlaps with Atlanta in the panhandle. Houston overlaps with New Orleans for Southern LA and parts of Mississippi. They have Southern and Southeast Texas. Dallas influences North Central and North Texas. DFW also influences Northern LA, Southern Arkansas, Oklahoma, and overlaps with Memphis for Northern Mississippi. It overlaps for Western Tenn with Memphis and Atlanta. Atlanta basically has the rest of the South. North Florida, Alabama, Eastern Misssissippi, Eastern Tennessee, and the Carolina's though qc_dreamin's post is different from Akhenaton who says that Atlanta has always had a sphere of influence there.
I tend to have the same view as you do on this one. I think Atlanta's sphere of influence covers a larger geographical area than DC, DFW, Houston, and Miami. That's not to say Atlanta is more important. I think it mainly stems from Southeastern history and cultural ties, whereas DFW, Miami, and Houston have relatively recently carved out their own niches.

Exactly. Atlanta has more historical connections socially and economically to more parts of the South than Houston, DFW, DC, or Miami ever could have. Like you said, that does not mean Atlanta is more important. But it just has more ties.

Can't believe you left out Hot Coffee, MS? Booming economy, new hi-rises going up all over, new Ritz Carlton, New Hollywood Casino, New Trump Condo Tower, 3 new auto plants, new Galleria South with Neiman Marcus, Saks, IMagnum, Le Alway Artmay, the list goes on and on! Hot Coffee will outpace Atlanta and Houston in terms of growth/population within the next 1-2 years...its almost unbelievable!

Humbrah. I hear they're getting a Grand Lux Cafe and as many other high-end chains as you can think of up that way too. Unbelievable, yeah ya right!.

Houston=Western LA

Dallas=Oklahoma

Miami=MOST of Florida's most populated areas(Orlando, Tampa, etc). And it includes North Florida(especially in sports)

Atlanta=Most of the Southern Piedmont:East TN, Western and Southern NC, SC, Northern Miss, Northern AL.

New Orleans=New Orleans............and probably Southern Miss and Southern Bama

As one who has lived in West Palm Beach, Austin, and Charlotte, I think I am well qualified. I'm so smug right now. On a random note, I turned 22 last Friday.

Dallas reaches into north La as well. NO reaches across the gulf until Florida like you said, and covers the rest of south La.

WestbankNOLA: I've always associated Mobile with NO somewhat. Even people that I know from the area is more associated with NO culture. And as the largest and city in the region I don't think they can help but look to NO. Normally, if anything big is happening in NO (concert, Saints home game, comedy show, etc) people from Lafayette to Mobile travel to NO.

I agree with the spheres os influence you mentioned. Geographically Atlanta covers the largest, followed by Dallas, then Miami and Houston are close.

Houston's influence also reaches into the Gulf of Mexico.
