Thousands??? The last figures I saw were no where near thousands. In fact I would guess that in recent years it has been the other way around. Jay

Just by my observation, this is the truth. Many of our neighbors here in southern CT are former Californians. I only know a handful of people who moved out there, and most have returned.

Indeed! I was surprised to see the migration statistics recently, at least for Hartford county (blue means we gained people from the area, red means we lost people to the area):

I grew up in a very snotty rich town and most people were very rude to me there. I didn't like the fast paced lifestyle. I also did not enjoy the cold. The people in the south are much different. They are so polite and much more welcoming in my opinion. The south is also beautiful and the weather is great (usually). All I'm saying is that there are other places besides New England.
While I am making assumptions here, you probably are:

- White
- Christian
- Fairly conservative politically
(and you already note that your mom was a born and raised Southerner to boot!)

Take out at least one of those three and odds are you will not find the South so welcoming or comfortable, the more you take out the less so. Or it might appear welcoming/comfortable but behind your back.... (granted in more 'cosmopolitan' places like Atlanta or the TX cities or in the parts of FL, VA, and NC that have received a lot of so-called "Yankees" it might not be as so)

I love Connecticut but I understand those who are looking to move somewhere else. If I weren't already settled here I would consider moving simply because of the prices. A decent haircut starts at about $30 + tip and tax (for women), whereas the minimum wage is $8.25, the same as in states where a haircut is $12.

Honey chile, I got news for you.

Southern cities do not rely on "Yankee transplants" for charm, ambiance, class, or friendliness.

Bless yore heart, I'm sure you can't help yourself.

I dont think there's a thing up here cheaper than anywhere in the south. Its ridiculous.

Just the taxes alone are disgusting. Nit to mention, look for the latest gun rights infringement to cost the state tens if millions of dollars. Yet another excuse to raise our taxes even further.

Weather and taxes.

I grew up in the NYC area. Lived in CT with my family for about 16 years before moving out west for DH's job. We were very happy in CT (but always broke). Our kids went to fabulous public schools.

If New England is 'home' to certain people, then it would probably be hard to leave under any circumstances. Home is, well, home. However green the pastures look over the fence, your own patch is where your heart is. I missed it terribly when we first left CT for California and wouldn't be derogatory about those who regard NE as home; a place worth staying.

We undertook what could have been a wrenching move for our family in 2001 to CA. After awhile I realized that the west suited me in more ways than N.E. ever could. After all these years, I can say that I would never, ever return to N.E. to live. Visit? ANYTIME. The west and northwest are, for me, the best places to live.
