I grew up in Baytown decades ago (in the 70s, man!) It was sliding downhill even then, although there is some new development north of I-10 where there used to be rice fields.

These days, I live in west Harris County, and I wouldn't care to go back to Baytown. Then again...I've already lived there for 20 years, so it's like I already served my sentence and was granted parole.

A few mottos considered by the Baytown Chamber of Commerce:

"Baytown: It's Where the Debris Meets the Sea!"

"Baytown: Gateway to Channelview!" (Coming in a close second: "Baytown: Gateway to Cloverleaf!")

"Baytown: When Your Video Project Requires Scenery Resembling a Smoking, Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland!"

And, finally, everybody likes riddles, right? Here's a classic one about Baytown:

Q: "What do nine out of every ten visitors to Baytown, Texas, say?"

A: "Gee...this place really stinks!"

I did not. It's my understanding that while Busey was born in Goose Creek (one of the predecessor communities of present-day Baytown) and his mother was from there originally, he moved with his family to Tulsa, OK, early in his childhood. That would have occurred in the B.M. era ("Before Miteybad").

But I can tell you that Gary Busey is definitely NOT the craziest individual ever to come out of Baytown, although he probably is the most famous moderately crazy guy from there.

OP - when you say you are torn about having your son far away from you, do you mean your job is in Baytown and your son will be in school in the neighborhood you live in? Just not sure I'm following the locations.

Yes. I meant I would be working in Baytown and living in Clear Lake. But my situation is atypical. Which is why, after much, much driving around the area last week, I settled on a new gated community in Baytown. And we will rent the first year and earnestly house hunt in Clear Lake then. I have an ex husband that we are both fearful of. I just can't justify being that far away from him until he's a little older. In a year, we'll both feel more settled.

Totally depends on where you live in Baytown. My aunt has a house on Cedar Bayou that is super nice and great for fishing or just relaxing on the deck.

It really depends on what you are looking for. Baytown is a fairly average American town/suburb. It's not bad, but it doesn't have a lot of unique character either.

I would personally have no issues living there but if you looking for excitement, adventure, or lots of specialty shops, it's probably not a good fit.

Baytown is a beautiful subtropical paradise, loaded with verdant subtropical flora, and blessed with copious yearly rainfall. The great Fred Hartman bridge certainly makes for a picturesque view.
