NYC Public schools will open on Monday. 65 schools will remain closed either because either damage, lack of power or because they are being used as a shelter. On Tuesday, all schools will be closed due to Election Day.
96% of the school buses will be running on Monday morning. Some routes will be different due to downed trees and some of the drivers will be substitute drivers.
There are 55,000 buildings in Zone A that still need to be inspected by the Buildings Dept.
Breezy Point still needs bottled water. The tap water in the rest of the city is okay.
Hopefully West 57th Street will open to traffic tonight. (They have been working on securing that dangling crane.)
Well lets see, you've got a mob of 60 people breaking into a pharmacy to take food and medicine that they need to survive (petty property crimes) and you've got two policeman with limited resources available to them. What are they supposed to do, arrest and tie them to a lamp post? Or arrest two people at a time and drive them down to the lock up, if they can even get through the streets to get there.
It is more important in situations like this for the police to protect lives and assist with rescue efforts, forget about the petty property crimes.
One suggestion is that the police could have used their powers to chase the looters out? I don't know, its a tough call when resources are limited.
one thing that's still a shock to me is when an NBC reporter asked Bloomberg about FEMA contacting him 2 days before landfall, asking if New York City needed extra help Bloomberg said something like nah I think we're good. not in those exact words of course - but he was very defensive when the reporter asked him about why he said that to FEMA
I was sitting here well aware of the confluence situation, well aware that the storm had done something unusual in that it was holding its pattern, well aware that it was swinging out right like an old guy turning left and that it would hit NY full on, and listening to Bloomberg say he was not calling for mandatory evacuation. I could not believe it. That was the 27th. Finally late morning the 28th he called for mandatory evacuation. An area that big you need every spare hour.
That's a cool picture. Did Battery Park City have power the whole time?
