Some points from Mayor Bloomberg's afternoon briefing:

19000 customers in the Rockaways are still without power.

This evening buses will be running from the shelters to transfer people to warming centers.

Give extra time for your commute tomorrow and please do not drive.

NYC public schools will be open (except the 65 that have issues), but some of these schools will not have heat. So please dress your children warmly.

Well my rescue dog is unfortunately facing major issues. I just got back from a vet and he needs thousands in dental work, which I cannot afford. We didn't even bother with blood work because the dental is a deal breaker on its own. I'm going to give him a few good days of relaxation and humane treatment, then bring him to the shelter to be put to sleep. We're pretty bummed about this, but knew it was a possibility.

Can you not find your dog a new owner, who could handle the expenses? Or perhaps cut a deal with your vet? I realize the timing is very difficult just now...but hate to see your dog lose his life because of the high cost of treatment which might otherwise lead to a good, long life for him.

The Humane Society vet, which is near Bloomingdale's (just east) is vastly cheaper for these things.
I do mean vastly. The same dental operation that was $1,000. at my vet would cost under $400. there.

The Humane Society Of New York

You can also obtain grant money for low cost or free vetting, especially for a rescue dog.

According to NBC this evening:

NYC alternate side street parking is suspended Monday & Tuesday.

Metro North will be on a near normal schedule.

LIRR will be on a modified schedule. (Most trains will run once every hour, but will not run certain at all.)

2/3/3/4/D/F/J subway lines are all up and running, but will be less frequent tomorrow than would be normally. So expect delays!

Most school buses will be running tomorrow.

Unfortunately, this guy is also around 10 years old, so while still a really tough call, his age makes it harder to spend a lot of money on him.

Since the little guy was a stray, you may be able to get assistance if you adopt him, specifically through the Pets for Life Program. While it's geared more to financial need, there might be a program for adopting a stray animal, or they might be able to refer you to one. One of the vets we used (now retired in Florida, or I'd send you to him) was a vet affiliated with various rescue societies, who would do procedures at cost, or free, in some cases, to encourage adoption of animals with needs.

Pets for Life NYC : The Humane Society of the United States

I would also network with the North Shore Animal League to see if they can offer any referral for assistance with the dog's health problems.

You may also get a referral from one of the veterinary schools as some may have clinics that may cover his health needs. It's a heartbreaking situation, but there may be hope, even for a 10-year old dog.
