A majority of his base supports gay marriage. He's got the problem with blacks who have a problem with it, but they aren't switching republican over gay marriage.

I think this is just another way to try to get the based (youth, in particular) fired up before November.

Based on what? Most of the people who wouldn't vote for him before still won't vote for him. And most people who would have voted for him before weren't doing it because he was against gay marriage.
