Jesus preached to individuals not to governments.
It was to individuals that preached compassion for your fellow man.
Jesus did not direct the Roman Empire to mandate compassion.
But that's ok..you folks go ahead and interpret the Bible as you see fit.
General welfare of citizens
1. vindicate the afflicted, care for needy - Ps. 72:4
2. compassion for poor and needy - Ps. 72:13; Jere 22:16
3. bring peace - Ps. 72:3
He'd encourage us to care for one-another and not rely on the government to do it.
Yup, that's exactly what the health care bill will do. We are the people, we vote, we are the government Unless they flew in some aliens that are sitting there it's still U.S. Citizens.
Jesus preached its every persons duty do help others. Subsequently if he were alive today
1. He would be labeled a communist by modern american conservatives for his teachings that the rich should help the poor (story of lazarus)
2.He would likely be assumed to be a terrorist once modern American conservatives see that he was not a blond haired blue eyed Northern European, but a brown skinned, woolly haired palestinian Jew. Glenn Beck would have a fit.
3. He supported opening ones door to the needy and those seeking shelter. This would be seen as pro-immigration by modern neocons and Jesus would be lambasted by them.
Sure I wish someone would pay for my food and my house. I wll send you my bank routing number. You will take care of this for me won't you? Or are you just selfish!!!!
No, you are being deliberately obtuse to try to avoid the issue.

OMG! What a GREAT post! With just a few words you summed it all up -- the same conservative people who yell at us liberals for NOT understanding the Word of God or what God "thinks" would probably think and do JUST THAT. THANK you for this post.
How so? People need food an shelter as much as healthcare, why isn't it your duty to provide it for me. You are being so selfish.
"Na uh -- YOU are." What a childish response to an important issue. Can you even offer something thoughtful about this issue or would you rather be sarcastic and point fingers?
The ignorance of some liberals/socialists is higher than the highest mountains of the world..
For they do not understand the difference between helping a needy person themselves and that of forcing someone else to help a needy person while they sit on the couch and eat corporate Oreos and watch corporate television.
