The liberal ignorance is higher than mountains.
So, ManGoneADreamin: and how has that worked for us? You know, slavery vs. free will. IMO, it seems that the charity of the masses towards those who are in need has been a little lacking in the last few decades...

It is a very important point. You somehow believe that because someone objects to the cost of the health care program they are being selfish. What is so magical about health care why not become fixated with food or shelter?

The ignorance of some liberals/socialists is higher than the highest mountains of the world..

For they do not understand the difference between helping a needy person themselves and that of forcing someone else to help a needy person while they sit on the couch and eat corporate Oreos and watch corporate television.
Well, I don't know who the "they" you speak of is, actually, because the people I generally work with providing food to people in need, shelter to those without, mentoring at-risk children and in general quietly and anonymously going about their lives while helping, giving and volunteering wherever they can are generally those awful "leftist/socialists" you refer to...seems a lot of the "blessed church people" don't want to get their hands dirty -- wasn't it enough that they already dropped dropped change into the Salvation Army pot at Christmas and gave an offering at Sunday morning services? Touch those dirty people who are "below" them? "Eyew...."

The Lord also invited "tax collectors", the IRS agents of their day, to repent.

[27] After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. "Follow me," Jesus said to him, [28] and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.

[29] Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. [30] But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"

[31] Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. [32] I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

Luke 5:27-32

If some would like to try to make the case that Jesus was a supporter of big government and high taxes, it doesn't seem to be supported by the scriptures. Voluntary giving, on the other hand, was greatly encouraged.

It IS important -- food and shelter as well. I believe that as the supposed richest country in the world, we should be taking care of OUR OWN first...and it's difficult to maintain or improve one's life when one cannot get well and cannot afford healthcare. Actually, I believe in providing more than healthcare for our people...we have a lot to fix right here in our own country before we think we can save the world. It is an embarrassment to me that thousands of children go hungry here in this country every night, that many more are living in the streets or shelters with whatever family they have -- not necessarily because the parents are addicts, alcoholics or anything else -- but because they were, as many people are today, one paycheck away from homelessness and the second shoe fell and they lost their home or shelter.
It is a disgrace that we here in this country who are blessed with SO much, allow our "neighbors" to go without and close our eyes to it. If we all were more concerned about issues outside what affects us and ours, the government would not HAVE to deal with these issues...but they do, and we do too. I have not SEEN a lot of charity among the upper middle class or upper class -- the most charity I see generally is from those least able to give it.

No, I agree with the other poster who said Jesus was not a supporter nor a detractor of government, and He DID teach giving. But I guess the point here in this thread is that unfortunately people in general here in our country are not big on doing that. If something could begin at the smallest level, a grass-roots movement of people in towns, neighborhoods, etc. really getting involved with their neighbors, CARING about them and what happens to them, that would be what Jesus would want. But sadly, it's not happening. Not to detract from the many people from all walks of life, people of all parties, and all faiths, who work tirelessly to help those in need -- but overall throughout history man has KILLED more in the name of Jesus than he has helped...what a miracle that God would still love us all and have compassion on us knowing all of this. I find myself on my face in gratitude many, many times, knowing that God still cares.

With all the money we pour into the government to deal with these issue it is a scandal that is why we shouldn't entrust them with our health care when they have proven they can't even help poor little kids.

As far as charity goes conservatives contribute 30% more than liberals. Think about that.

Oh please. Where did you get those figures from, Rush Limbaugh? And why are you keeping score. And what does "contribute" have to do with anything? It's one thing to send a check -- it's another thing to actually care enough to do something for someone -- you can send a check to a charity and see your next door neighbor's child go without food or supervision. Don't you see that?
