I am not all that happy with the writing and the timing in season 7. I am going to stop whining about it though.
I have decided instead to start whinging about it instead!
That's an old and honorable term on the net. Surprised to hear it on the show.
That's hilarious! That word has become our word of the week around the house!
M-W says there is a difference I had not realized before:
"When "hwinan" became "whinen" in Middle English, it meant "to wail distressfully";
"whine" didn't acquire its "complain" sense until the 16th century.
"Whinge," on the other hand, comes from a different Old English verb, "hwinsian,"
which means "to wail or moan discontentedly.""
Maybe it's time for a spin-off "Game of Thrones is stupid and for some reason I'm watching it and posting about it even through I dislike it" thread.
I speak only for myself:
I do not hate the show. In fact, I love the show, which is why Season 7 has been such a huge disappointment for me. This previously great show with fantastic writing seems to have tossed all logic, reason, character development, and attempts at coherent plot out the window. I love Game of Thrones, and our beloved show deserves better than the dreck the writers have plopped out this season.
It really does seem like Michael Bay has taken over the show. It has never looked better. It is gorgeous. But it's empty. It's like a totally decked out sparkling car that will barely limp around the block and the $40,000 stereo system only plays polka music on the AM radio. But man, does it look great.
That's an old and honorable term on the net. Surprised to hear it on the show.
Might be old and honorable, but I first encountered it about 15 years ago, from Australians posting on the internet.
Any British people want to chime in about daily usage of the word 'whinging'? Is it also commonly used in the UK?
