You need to get out more. I live in Northern VA.

And although I appreciate the huge job market and conveniences available here, I'd say its probably the least interesting part of the state. With a few notable exceptions, its nothing but a bland sea of beige vinyl siding, strip malls, and chain restaurants. Very little soul or character.

Best:

I don't know about best but what I like the most is Winchester and Charlottesville. I do like the Shanendoah regions.

Worst:

I don't really know, I guess parts of Richmond?

I'd say it's the most interesting part of the state. When I lived in Arlington, my neighbors consisted of foreign embassy personnel, intel folks, college kids, globe-trotters of various types, and people who worked for non-profits I'd never heard of. The post-modern functionality and glass/steel boringness of Crystal City or a Rosslyn might be bland to most people, but it was beautiful to me.

Richmond city and Newport News/Hampton are the worst. Charlottesville, Fairfax County, and Midlothian-Short Pump areas are probaly the best to live in the state.

Charlottesville seems cool but cost of living is high there, the college kids might be annoying, and traffic sucks there for a smaller town.

In Richmond, the Midlothian and Short Pump areas are nice and I think that area to the south, Chesterfield I think, has some new growth as well.

The worse areas are probably Danville, Newport News, Hampton, Suffolk, parts of Norfolk, and then the high cost of living areas in Northern Virginia.

Evan83, you totally contradict yourself by first saying that only northern VA is good then saying Tidewater is good as well! Please stop making yourself look ridiculous! There are many good places and quite affluent places in Tidewater thank you very much! I live in one on them! Your comment is both condescending and annoying!

FL Beaches,Obviously by your statement you haven't been in VA long. Yes, there are bad places in Norfolk but there are also very affluent areas like Ghent!

Artsywoman, you are very condescending! Everyone I have encountered loves living in Tidewater! There are some VERY affluent areas the "further south you go". Did you know that D.C. not any of the other cities in VA was on the list of most dangerous cities to live in in 2014? By your post, I bet you didn't!

Sour.Amaretto, I agree with some of what you said but if you have ever been to Ghent in Norfolk or to MacArthur Center you would know that Norfolk has some really nice places and yes, I would not live in South Norfolk but Great Bridge in Chesapeake where I live is very nice so don't generalize about Tidewater please!
