this route is only 350 miles within CA. No need to buy gas there. Come full, leave empty! (I do it all the time) My car goes 1250 miles / tank and uses free fuel (home brew), since 1976... https://goo.gl/maps/Y53UYpVLpvJqkNfB8

Cube shows range of 360 miles / tank.
Stealth, I like to drive only 3-4 hours a day. So it's not only the getting there, but returning to Oregon. Yes, the Cube gets good mileage, which is one reason I'm pretty adamant about keeping it, but it's sometimes more than mileage I'm concerned with. It's also about where I can spend the night.
California is going to always be there and it may be for another trip. I know some of the utubers I watch are doing the California route and it looks great.
I was going to leave today but not only is it rainy but very overcast. I think it would be too tiring to drive in this. Tomorrow it's supposed to be sunny so think it will be a better day.
So often my traveling is dictated by the weather but I'll always pick safety while traveling.
As for gas, I put in $30 and had previously put in $25 when I first got here. So, $55 so far. Sigh, I probably won't be able to put much, if anything, in savings this month. That's traveling for you.
I still have a few hundred from this month but I may end up taking some from savings. I hope not but we'll see.
Actually Stealthrabbit, I may rethink that. I've heard that 395 from Reno would be a good route. That would take me close to Susanville. Then continue on to Klamath Falls over to Medford and on from there.
I'll keep watching other's plans and routes and decide as I go along.
So now it's almost1:30 and the sky has cleared and it's turned into a beautiful day. I've spent the last few hours reorganizing the car and I think it's much better.
Still, I am going to wait until tomorrow because I'm waiting for things to dry out before they go in the car and I have no idea how long that will take. I do know I don't want a wet or damp tent and chair in the car.
I'm also finding more garbage to get rid of.
The trip to the refuse area was something else. You go in and take a long winding dirt road until you come to the actual dumping area. But, it's free so I can't complain. I don't know how the people that work there can stand the smell.
I just looked and they are open 7 days a week so will make that my last stop before leaving Pahrump. I think I'll even finally toss my tent. It only cost $24 two years ago and the wind finally pretty much destroyed it. I'd say it's done it's job and can be retired.

Well you have Love's in Reno, Corning(CA), K falls, and Roseburg. OR
There are truckstops in places like Eureka and Arcata and Crescent City (Hubs of commerce on 101).
Oregon can still be pretty cold (We got 5" snow last week, which is 2 months later than normal).
Good luck.
most my friends take 395 then cut to K Falls, OR
Maybe Lava Beds (National monument ) has $5 campground availability. (I've never stayed, but there should be BLM nearby) it is quite remote, so you can fake it.
Hawk, If I can find a decent route to get there, it does look nice.
If your going to Medford via Klamath Falls, when you get to Medford take I-5 north to Grants Pass where you get on 199 south to Jedediah Smith Redwoods. After your finished seeing the Redwoods, your about 9 miles from Crescent City & 101 along the coast to Brookings, etc.
If they are still open, between Medford & Grants Pass on I-5n, there is Valley of the Rogue State Park Rest Area. It's real nice, next to the Rogue River. If you should happen to drive north of Grants Pass on I-5, there is Manzanita Rest Area, about 3 miles north of Grants Pass.
