California vs Alaska Easy choice. Alaska may be the "rugged man's" ultimate domicile you still can't go skiing and then to the beach on the same day (you probably can but it would be a better decision in California). There are many more reasons but CA has greater diversity and versatility.
Hawaii vs North Carolina Hawaii is fine but it's a vacation place to me and would be a top 3 state to visit but living in a spot shows flaws. I want to keep paradise perfect image-wise. NC to reside in. New York vs Washington NY is a big state. It's not all about The City. There are those two Western NY cities of note, Syracuse, then head over to Albany and more.
Pennsylvania vs Colorado PA, easy choice. Denver is nice but it isn't Philadelphia. Colorado is another good spot to see for vacation but PA is better to live in.
Texas vs Massachusetts Not an easy choice but I'll take TX for the variety of metros and scenery.
Ohio vs Michigan I'm really not sure why people think Ohio is some kind of punching bag, it's somewhat like the model Midwest state. Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, etc matches up well what Michigan has.
Florida vs Arizona Both states are hit. FL has beaches and better metros to me. Miami is like the Final Boss in this state match up. PHX has to take on Jax, TPA, MCO, before it gets to lose to Miami. Plus AZ is more of a vacation spot for me, Florida is more for everyday living (I see FL as a vacation state too but more livible).
Oregon vs New Jersey New Jeru easily. More well rounded, better food, and has pretty good history and location. Don't really know why people think it's a punching bag either (Ewr isn't my favorite but that's lite).
Not disputing your choices, but calling any of these "no-brainers" save maybe California vs. Alaska appears to me to be countermanded by the votes so far.
Oh My Word, we have some interesting results within the early votes.
Texas vs Massachusetts are tied. Didn't expect that to be honest. Oregon and New Jersey is pretty tight too as well as Hawaii vs North Carolina. It will be very interesting to see what happens. I know that this is only the first day of votes for this round, but something I am puzzled about is that Pennsylvania is in a good lead against Colorado at the moment, but Colorado smashed VA last round. I would've guessed that the love for Pennsylvania and Virginia would be quite comparable but maybe not so much.
California vs Alaska: California all the way. No contest here. Alaska is stunning, but way too cold. California has it all--large cities, small towns, stunning coastline, surfing beaches, incredible mountains, beautiful desert, and a cultural behemoth.
Hawaii vs North Carolina: I gotta pick Hawaii here, by a hair. I love North Carolina and it has stunning mountains and amazing beaches. Great cities too. But Hawaii is unmatched by almost anywhere on earth--a true geographical treasure.
New York vs Washington: NYC makes New York win, hands-down. Long Island beaches are incredible too. Washington is pretty but does not compare at all to NY.
Pennsylvania vs Colorado: Colorado wins here for me. It's one of my favorite states. PA is no slacker, but cannot match Colorado's rocky mountain beauty.
Texas vs Massachusetts: Texas for sheer size and diversity in geography. Massachusetts is beautiful, but small, and Boston is a favorite city, but TX has much more variety.
Ohio vs Michigan: Michigan for me. Stunning lake coastal beaches and shores. Ohio can't compare.
Florida vs Arizona: Arizona wins this easily for me. I love the desert and Tucson is a gem of a city. Add in Sedona, Grand Canyon, Painted Desert and Petrified Forest, and it's easy, despite Florida's beaches. But Florida is way too flat.
Oregon vs New Jersey: Oregon wins this, due to geography. It's much larger than NJ too. NJ has nice areas, but Oregon beats it due to stunning mountains and coastal areas.
