How did Russia manage to give birth to a mad maniac, a pathological killer and sadist, a criminal in the most literal sense of the word - to give birth, to give him absolute political power and give him carte blanche to any adventures and crimes that in the end put not only him personally, but also the whole country, the whole people, even its entire centuries-old culture outside the law in the world? When the smoke subsides and the emotions subside, it will be analyzed as seriously and thoughtfully as the similar question about the German nation and its leader was analyzed.

Undoubtedly, this man, being some kind of diabolical combination of all possible vices without a single not only virtue, but simply a human trait (even hitler can find something human - but not him!), turned out to be surprisingly consonant with what can be conditionally called the "national soul", in the sense that his personal complexes of a small, evil, vengeful, deprived in childhood little man resonated with the complexes of the collective (Russian) unconscious. Generations of Chekists, Vertukhai, Gopniks, the lesson finally produced the condensation of pure Evil, as we see now this man and this society in which he was possible. Now nothing can be rolled back and corrected. Russia has appointed itself to the role of the main enemy of mankind and has been confirmed in this role. Before our eyes, the suicide of an entire civilization is rapidly unfolding - and it remains only to pray that it does not drag the entire planet with it in nuclear fire.

I liked this piece, straight to the point, it describes Putin exactly and succinctly. Translated by Microsoft Word. Excellent quality translation even though some words are treated as proper nouns, Chekists - members of the soviet secret police, predecessor of FSB, notorious for their crimes against humanity matching and exceeding those of German nazis, Vertukhai - guards at Stalin' death camps, Gopniks - street thugs.

Russia will win the 'war'.
But they will lose the ultimate battle.
And their country will pay and suffer dearly for this hideous act.

Glad to see there are some good Russians that see this invasion of Ukraine for what it is, and believe in the principles of democracy and free speech.

There was a great article I read a while back that talked about the demographic time bomb of Russia and how they will lose significant population in the coming decades. The killings under Stalin, and then the health declines and alcoholism all led to declining birth rates that will threaten Russia's economy in the coming decades. The article speculated that invading Ukraine was partially a resource grab, partially a vanity project for Putin to reclaim lost territory when the USSR collapsed, but mostly a way to stave off demographic declines for at least a little longer. The irony is that all the death and destruction going on in both Ukraine, and among the Russian soldiers that are dying, is accelerating this demographic time bomb. There will be no winners in the end, even if Russia manages to annex Ukraine. And Russia will be a pariah state for a generation or more.

I'm sorry, but this "demographic time bomb," the latest one, came not because of "Stalin" or "alcoholism," but because of the "market reforms" orchestrated by "American advisers," on Clinton's watch back in the 90ies.

And this is the reason why so many Russians are supporting Putin now.

Russia's fertility rate has been below replacement level since the mid 1960's, with only a slight blip in positive territory around 1986-87 before the USSR collapsed. Trying to blame it on Clinton is disingenuous. The fertility rate was actually improving until about 2014-2015 when it started nosediving again--which coincides with the Russian invasion of Crimea.

Nothing that Putin is doing now is helping the demographics issue. He is doing real damage to Russia. Hopefully the Russian people begin see him for what he is.

"Slight blip?"
If you say so.

Either you start accepting things for what they are, or you can keep on making things up to your own liking, that Russians "simply don't understand."

You are not comprehending. I said fertility rate. 2.1 is the replacement level that supports organic population growth...Russia dipped below it in 1967, only rose above it in 1986 & 1987, and has never been above it since. Nothing I said was false.

Russia's population growth up until it peaked around 1990 was due to immigration from other Soviet republics. However, fertility rate--the ticking time bomb--has most certainly been a problem going well back into the 60's.

Go to the table titled "Vital Statistics of Russia 1946-2021" and look at the "Total Fertility Rate" column.
