Demand is there, that's why its being considered. But if Greensboro is going to build all these downtown hotels, a convention center will help make sure they are successful in the long run. 100,000 square feet is not is big as you think. Its actually pretty small. By comparison the convention centers in downtown Raleigh and Charlotte are 500,000 square feet so 100,000 is pretty modest. Downtown Greensboro needs that at least, anything smaller will limit what kind of conventions come downtown. Its not even worth pursuing unless the facility has some size to it. An oversized ballroom will do nothing but attract wedding receptions. It shouldn't be any smaller than 80,000 sq ft.
If the demand were there (or if Carroll thought he could fudge data to make a demand look feasible), then why isn't he proposing that? Seems like foolish business to knowingly not strive to meet an unmet demand.

We don't know yet whether he is or not. It may be a part of his Carroll at Bellemeade South project or it may not be. We'll find out when he makes an announcement. He's certainly throwing a lot of hints of building one though.
It's a shame we lost all those buildings along Davie St.
I know. Davie Street was a lot like Elm Street. Some of the buildings still exist on the southern end of Davie. Much of it was demolished or destroyed by the great 1985 fire.
wow that is weak compared to all the other projects..but good for them, this is 1 out 3 so far.
As ugly as the old jail is, they are demolishing a 9 story midrise for a 2 story office building for the Sheriffs department. Don't know why they won't replace it with a new 9 story building. The former sheriff was going to renovate the old jail for the Sheriffs office and use the entire 9 floors. Why do they need so little space now?
