I wish that were the case, but I have to pay for their food stamps, their health care, their children's lunch at school, etc.

Many gamblers aren't on any government assistance and have well-off jobs.

They do it anyway. They just take it to Louisiana and Mississippi. Isn't it better for it to stay instate and be recycled back into TX funds so to speak?

Changes in crime rates varied by city-to-city. Larceny generally increased but for the most part there were no discernible trends. Similar for divorce and suicide, although there was some increase in suicide rates. Where there was a statistically significant impact was in bankruptcy. In 7 of the 8 areas studied, bankruptcy rates increased significantly (and at a higher rate that non-casino linked control communities studied).
There you have it folks. It would not be as awesome as I am thinking, but it would not be as devilish as you guys make it out to seem

Houston already has drugs, prostitution/sex industry, run down neighborhoods, etc. This is nothing new.

We had our chance at the amusement park thing, and it ultimately failed (although you could argue it was more of Six Flags failure). Its time we gave casino gambling a chance now.

Sure the degenerate gamblers will likely make it their second home....but may as well do that here rather than in Lousianna. I take the bus to Lousianna about once a month, and I can tell you this: Just because gambling is not in their backyard, the addicts will still find a way. MANY people I talk to there go several times a week. I was talking to this one lady last week who said she takes the bus there every other day.....brings about $30 with her to get her fix.

Or we could just keep paying the poor mans tax and play the lottery.

I had fun at Astroworld back in the day.....I was even a season pass holder for a few years. But lets see.....what would I rather do during Houstons looooooooong summer: Stand in 100+ degree heat waiting in long lines all day next to sweaty obnoxious tourists who cannot control their kids so I can get on a one minute ride.....OR, sitting in a nice comfortable casino sipping free drinks and watching the reels decide my fate
Exactatically!
We need something new. We need to stop thinking suburban and bring in some urban nightlife

Casino means urban nightlife?? Didn't get that feeling when I was in Lake Charles or Shreveport.

If Houston just focus more on building a big concentrated entertainment district in the cities core that could offer something for residents and tourist that would be much better then a casino. People need to get over the casino thing. That more then likely won't become a reality.

And what would an entertainment district have? Bars? Clubs? We have tons of those already. A casino would be the big focus and all those things we already have just built around it. But we do need a central thing.

Yeah we have plenty of bars and clubs. But I would love to see something on the level of a Pier 39 or Union Square or French Quarters and I think the perfect location(where I see the most potential) Is the Buffalo Bayou/Main st. area/ EaDo

You can have some Hotels, art galleries, shops, spots for kids and families,a theme that represents Houston. Maybe some monuments/sculptures. All centralized. See Houston has all these but not centralized. This is what people complain the most about Houston. Why not transform that area into something that will attract everybody. I mean I don't think it will take anything away from the institution we already have in place it will just add on to what Houston has to offer. I think that could benefit Houston more.

A Casino can be beneficial but that still wouldn't change the view of how some people perceive Houston to be. I mean who knows to explore all of what Houston has to offer if they'll just drive right to the casino?

I said an entertainment disctrict would be urban entertainment, not just casinos

we have things spread all over the darn place, nothing centralized. Bar and clubs are big for a few years than people move on quick. An entertainment district would be where all the new bars and clubs are set up. Not jumping from Richmond to Downtown, to Katy to washington ave to Galveston.

stop saying a casino a casino like that is what I said. I clearly stated in my OP that it was an urban entertainment district with various things
