My car just turned 35 years old ('79 Cadillac). If I've read the NC statutes correctly, I no longer have to get it inspected, right?
Correct, vehicles that are 35 years old and older are not required to be inspected. I would recommend having it done one more time, just to cover your butt.
It will fail the visual. It should at the very least have a catalytic converter. A tailpipe would also have to extend out from under the vehicle. A shop once tried to fail my Mustang because it didn't have original equipment converters on it. I pointed out the fact that the car was 14 years old at the time and the original converters were no longer available. Then he let my aftermarket converters pass.
Almost, a muffler and tailpipe are also required, correct about extending beyond passenger compartment.
