The only person to blame is the fat guy/girl. I think health insurers have every right to increase premiums of fat people that can't control themselves.

Wow...what a sweeping statement there. It's so easy to blame the individual, but I guess it's tougher (at least for you) to look at the bigger picture and realize that certain aspects of American society / culture are equally to blame.

To blame but NOT equally. Overeating is a choice like drinking, whoring, or drugging. Our nation lacks in personal responsibility. Everyone wants to sue someone or label everything a disease. What happened to cleaning up your own mess?

I don't condone overeating, but I'm talking about the fact that in America, there's a fast food joint on every corner, that processed crap food is cheaper and good food is generally more expensive. You can blame the individuals to an extent, but society as a whole is also to blame.

Agreed. Its like blaming a deadbeat dad for running away. YES he is to blame but the single mother will do the struggling. They are both responsible but who has to go it alone and suffer the fallout ? So who has the biggest responsibility to not make a baby?
It's easy to blame the individuals themselves, but we should all shoulder some of the blame for creating a society which is geared towards being obese and unhealthy.
? Not sure who "we" is supposed to be, but this is a classic cop-out ie "it's society's fault." Nope.

Some individuals are to blame, but it's really not as black and white as some of you may think.
Yeah, I think it pretty much is in most cases.
The only people I would blame other than the person themselves is the family they grew up in, ie if the family was like that or had that lazy/over-eating attitude, since (with rare exception) people are largely defined by the family they grew up in and that influence is extremely powerful. But even then, ultimately it's up to them.
you just have too much damn food. you go on diets. think about how unnatural that is. you see magazines with ecstatic faces about slimming down while most of the world is starving or eat to live. "they actually eat to live." i think americans have forgotten that simple principle. food is a fuel, not a hobby. a symptom of a greedy, paranoid culture that is contagious. you are afraid you won't have enough or don't have enough. it's strange. maybe you are just greedy @sses. lol. you eat a lot because your boundaries are a sham. have you ever noticed people who pick at thier food in public but are pigs behind closed doors? that's because americans are actually motivated my simple greed and they themselves don't even realize it until they eat like pigs, then they wonder why that is. you can't fulfill that bottomless pit because of greed.
nah, actually it means americans are secretly unhappy. only those who are unhappy overeat. that is a symptom of some type of neurosis, whatever or wherever it lies. and greed LOL
We have to shake the post depression notion of eating until you get "full" and teach our kids that fast foods are like ,ciggarettes, alcohol and beer. All you can eat buffett's are a rip off because you really can't eat $12 or $13.00 worth of food from a grocery store in a half hour, They know it's not the money that motivates us as much as the notion that we will get "full" There are about seven holidays through out the year where I think "feasting and is okay, and when you add birthdays and weddings there are apt to be plenty of times to feast and get full, but over weight people get full of food three times a day which I think is obscene, not to mention the cost to the health care system
I guess the blame for obesity (and capitalism) lies in greed where need is replaced with want.
The moment that need is completely replaced with want spells the beginning of the end of humanity.
fantastic post.
