The cheapest milk I saw in stores near me is $3.88 per gallon,
Seems plenty of room for the processor and grocer to make a good profit.

I can't tell if you're joking around or you aren't knowledgeable about how a grocery store works. They don't make profit on every item they sell. In fact, they sell many items at a loss.

And they sell these items at a loss because people won't BUY them at the actual price they should be based on the cost of production...yet somehow you think people would be willing to pay increased prices for their food???

Actually they do this so they can compete with farmers who can afford to sell them for less since they have less expenses. The idea is that if they compete with their prices on produce, the people who walk into the stores will buy more profitable items like cereal as well.
