Not sure how I feel about this. Glad to see the Kings get Versteeg, as we needed a forward with Gaborik now out until the playoffs. But I guess the Canes decided to do a firesale rather than pursue a playoff run. Maybe this makes the team better in the long run? Who knows.
Question now is whether Liles, Nash, Ward, etc will be gone by 3 pm today. Another shoe or two yet to drop, I think.
After last week's losses, the probability that the Canes make the playoffs was so small that Francis had to do something. I am happy to see house cleaning. Mediocrity is killing this organization. J Staal, Skinner, Faulk, and Wisniewski are the only keepers from the high-priced players. The upcoming UFAs on the Canes had a combined salary of over $28 million. That's serious money that Francis can use this summer on new FAs who will fit into Peters' style of play, although some of it will have to be allocated to Rask, Nordstrom, and several Charlotte players.

Ward will still be around, unless the Canes give up other really valuable assets to someone who will absorb his salary.
They cannot retain any more salary this season.
Kings coach on Versteeg: "I think he gives us some depth and the ability to finish and play all positions for us. It’s important, Gabby’s out, and I think that it showed up even tonight where we’ve been using three and a half lines, basically, when you look at minutes played. Especially in back-to-backs, you need four lines, four good lines."
I think he'll do good as a King. He's only scored 1 goal in the last 14 games, but we've got a good system in LA that I think he'll fit right into. Our trade deadline moves in our Cup-winning years (Lucic and Gaborik) paid off big time.
