I’m clearing out the kitchen cabinets. OMG the stuff in there….things I won’t ever use again and some I’ve never used, but it's all good stuff, not junk. I’ve filled several bags of kitchenware to donate and I’m not done, yet. Feels good to have gotten this far and will feel even better when I'm done

We've done it. Didn't seem to have an effect.
I told her if we ever divorced, she'd turn into a hoarding cat lady. I will admit, she keeps a very clean house. The only real problem here is the basement. And the TIVO machine....
Any ideas on how I can get my wife to go along with downsizing? She refuses to get rid of anything. I have to wait until she's out before I can delete old messages from the answering machine! She doesn't want to delete old shows on TIVO, even when she knows we won't watch them.
Our basement is a disaster. Piles of old clothes and boxes from retail purchases. The idea is we give the clothes to charity for the tax write off. But it never happens.
Any ideas on how I can coax her into "get rid of old crap" direction?

sorry, but I don't think you can. Some people just can't let go of things.
Maybe see a counselor. Help her talk about why she does these things. I have a sister kind of like this. She'll say that she paid $$ for something and just can't let it go.
Its a mental thing. She'll buy some crap and try to foist it on us. I tell her, you know I;m just going to throw it in the trash - lol. I like to see her squirm!!!
Son who lives in Kazakhstan is here for 3 weeks! He is being so helpful. He is extremely strong and fit so running up and down stairs with boxes is nothing to him. Plus he is being merciless. He's convinced us to let so much go. We keep thinking stuff will sell but in reality we just don't have time. He went deep in a little used linen closet upstairs and found many expired meds like cough medicine, etc so he filled up a box full of stuff like that.
The animal shelter near me will also take old tee shirts, sheets and anything soft. I sent them an old bathrobe and they took that. Call first and ask what they like. Rags, too, I think.
We are a few years from retiring. We have been in our current house 9 years. We are getting rid of stuff. We bring all our unwanted furniture to Habitat for Humanity. Books to the library. Crafty stuff to the schools. We lost weight so our good clothes go to United Way, they give them to people who needs them for jobs. Our jeans etc we gave to St Vincent DePaul because they keep it in the community. I have always heard that Goodwill often doesn't use the clothes but recycles them.

That just isn't true. Goodwill and a lot of the other charities go through all of the clothes to see what is salable in their stores. What they cannot sell locally gets compressed into large bales and either shipped overseas or to one of the usada ropa shops along the Mexico border where there is a strong market for used clothing.
Most of the charities who accept donations get about 5x what they could reasonable sell. Also, a LOT of the material is long past salable and is eventually sold to rag makers.
