It's not just the background check/fee. It's the fact that one gun law leads to more gun laws.

There's already talk on not letting you by ammo for something the state of California doesn't know about. There's the fear that when this doesn't have any effect on crime, the overlords will dream up another law.

The issue is not the $1 tax. It's the fact that State of California will have a record of what you bought and the quantity you bought. It's then possible that California has a "concern" of the amount of ammo you bought and list you on the "watch list" of potential mentally unstable mass killer, and decided to pay you a visit in your home, going through a "thorough review" of your firearm inventory matched against the ammo you've bought and "interview" you to make sure you are mentally fit.

Don't believe it's possible? Just Google people who have registered their AR-15 and only have the California DOJ decided they have "illegally" modified the firemen and send the Sheriff to your house to confiscate your guns.

they would have done that already when you are buying FAs. every time you purchase a FA, you pay for background check so if they are keeping records, they would know that you have an arsenal already.

they dont have to wait for you to purchase millions of ammo to determine you are unstable

What if there's incorrect entry to the DOJ AFS? There are over 1 million gun purchases annually in California and mistakes happened. Now there is "mismatch" between the ammo you buy and the calibers you own. That will trigger a warning to the DOJ.

Also, the firearms purchase may not trigger an alarm but the quantity of ammo you buy could. How many AR15 you own will trigger alarm? But several thousand rounds of ammo could.

I know several people that own several thousands of rounds of ammo who are very productive members of society doing more than most to contribute to the building of California's infrastructure. Will they be considered unstable because they purchase thousands of rounds of ammo?
This law just seems like an end around attack on gun owners as well as a cash grab.

you really cant avoid it but you can minimize the tax you pay by buying in bulk

yeah it sucks to pay background check fee every time you buy ammo
There is already talk of limiting amounts so there is another reason to reload.

There is far too much confusion about the laws.

Purchasing large amounts of ammo doesn't determine you are unstable. I hope that wasn't the intent of this post? Most people that can afford high end weapons, and many of them, are usually pretty well off. As in they pay a lot of taxes and contribute to society.

How about those that reload? Are they doing this for components?

No, im just pointing out to another poster that if buying lots of ammo will trigger an investigation, then they could have done it too for people buying lots of guns. they dont have to wait for ammo records (if ever there is one)

You want to know what I'm afraid of? Just look at how well CA DMV handled to Real ID rollout
