Nothing wrong with a pixie cut. The thing is, you have to have the complete STYLE to pull it off. Like Ataraxia a few posts above. It looks GOOD on her because it fits her sense of personal style.
The thing about pixie cuts is that you have to have a pixie body for it to look good. You cant have pixie hair and an ogre's or troll's body. It just wouldnt look right and people may very well think of you as a lesbian. No one ever mistook Halle Berry or Rhianna for lesbians with thier short hair. Its because they didnt have the troll/ogre body. Maybe that is what happened with your office mate.
Pixie body? Troll/ogre body? Are you saying only thin women can sport the pixie but fat women can't? It's all about the face structure, not the body type. I've known some thin, fit women with short hair that didn't look good, and some heavier set who pulled it off well.
OP-I think you're getting too worried about this. If you'd read my post earlier you'd see where I mentioned approximatly 50 other women I work with (early 20's to mid 40's) all have the same shoulder length/just above shoulders cut with choppy layers. Would you accuse them of conformity?
With very short hair, I worry less about being perceived as butch, and more about being perceived matronly.
Ditto that...I remember when my cousin and I were very young, we were watching tv together and this commercial came on where this woman - guessing her age now was late 20's or early 30's - had short hair and was dressed very conservatively. It was a floor wax commercial I want to say - kids running around so she was of childbearing age.
My cousin turned to me and said "I'm never gonna look like that when I have kids!" I asked her what she was talking about and she said those pants and THAT HAIR!?! This woman had an earlobe length Dorothy Hamill going (ok you can guess my age from that can't you...yikes) and high waisted khakis on. I remember it clear as a bell, her perception and that stereotype of a matronly, old-appearing woman stuck with me hard.

Judi Dench. I can't picture her with anything but short hair. Dianne Wiest has also worn the look well.

No, not really. I was responding to the person who posted about their friends being questioned about being lesbian. If a woman is chunky (i.e., not very feminine) and wears pants all the time and has a short hair cut, most people would probably wonder if she's gay.
This is refreshing...but what I want to know is the OP a man or a woman? If I weren't actively dating and looking to date men, I would love to cut off all my hair to a punk rock pixie style. So much easier to deal with on a daily basis.

Oh please, I'm not looking at Judi Dench even if she runs around naked
