In Season 4, Episode 7 of The Tracey Ullman Show, Baltimore actor, Michael Tucker, portrayed father to Ullman's JoJo. The skit was set in a Baltimore row house. Tucker advised Ullman to "take a Liverpool accent and Americanize it." Ullman nailed the accent.
In my opinion, if you Americanize a Liverpool accent, you do certainly end up with a Southern sound. Just watch "A Hard Day's Night" and muddle the accent of the Fab 4 and see whether your sound comes up more Northeastern or Southern.
How about we divide the Northeast into 3 sub-regions:
New England (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut)
Northern Mid-Atlantic (New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey)
Southern Mid-Atlantic (Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, District of Columbia)
Seems more fair for the Northeast so New Jersey and Delaware wouldn't have to be in the same region as Maine if the Northeast splits into three.

How about, the first two are subregions of the Northeast and the third is a subregion of the South.
Seriously. One of my good buds from VA sounds like a good ole boy when he is drunk. Not very Northeastern at all.
I sound almost exactly like Gov. Doug Wilder (VA) and i'm MD born and raised.
And calling WV or VA Northeastern makes no sense. Even if NoVA has become "northern".
(Though I would say it has become "Generic American", not the same thing as northern IMO.)

Its true that relations have been declining and open warfare may break out between New Jersey and Maine. New Jersey of course can field a larger army, especially if allied with Delaware, so they will be on the offense. But with all the traffic on I-95, the New Jersey forces could not even reach Maine in a organized manner. They would reach the Maine border in piecemeal fashion and can be destroyed at leisure by the smaller but lethal Maine Lumberjack Brigades. New Jersey Hit Squads will however be more successful.
Navy wise, Maine has a fleet of Red Lobster Boat squadrons that can bombard the Jersey Shore. But then again, New Jersey has their fishing Party Boat fleet that can mine Maine ports.
Eventually the war will sputter out as people will begin to ask "why exactly are we fighting this war"? So I think the war would turn out be a draw.
People from Maine will call this war the "Deep South War". People from New Jersey and Delaware will call it the "Polar War".
They'll call it the War of Mid Atlantic Assertiveness.
