LA is much better than Houston. There's just too much of it to get your arms around and people are fleeing there in droves. Houston is a sweltering, crime-ridden hole and a pathetic example of what people will put up with for the sake of a job.

You're jealous, just move here already!
The fastest growing U.S. cities - Jun. 28, 2007

We are all getting to crowded, I don't see much difference between the 3 except humidity and crime and maybe air quality. 2 have oceans, 1 has hurricanes.

Basically we are all to big to support ourselves so what difference does it make. It's not like we mind loosing people to Houston, you deal with the crowd, good luck!

New York is out. Napa is out. Sampling petrochemicals is the new thing. And with the 3rd highest murder rate, Houston is not only walkable, but more appropriately: runnable. That, coupled with the pollution, humidy, swamp-like environs and the suicidal nature of energy executives and local sports fans has spawned a renowned medical center - so you got that going for you as well.

Now I'm torn for what to do for the holidays... the beaches of LA or the fresh air, easy commute and liberal vibe of Houston?
The image of people's faces upon hearing "You just won an all expenses paid trip to Houston!" is hilarious - "Houston? What the f...?" LMAO.

maybe all the immigrants who send their money back home, and don't spend it here within the local economy, or maybe its just all the immigrants that doesn't make it desireable. Besides PHX doesn't produce anything that is competitive on a global scale. just my half a .cent anyway

Los Angeles used to be just like Phoenix. I have a friend who grew up in Los Angeles back in the 50's and 60's and said that she was unhappy with the way the city had grown and how attitudes had changed. She moved to Phoenix 6 months ago and loves it. Houston and Los Angeles are not as nice as Phoenix, especially for families. Plus would you rather have all the cultural conflict in LA over Prop 8 (which LA county voted for), or the comfortable conservatism and family values of Phoenix?

traveller, good points but the controversy over Prop 8 is spread all over the country now, not just in California

Greatness, desirability? Houston? Talk about blind, inbred boosterism. No way.

Phoenix may be in crisis momentarily, but it's hardly a city in decline. Much of its future still lies forward.
