As I often point out, America and Britain are the only two places in the world where life expectancy, incomes, and savings are falling in tandem. Yet they’re also two of the richest and most powerful countries in the world. Both those things can’t be true…unless these have somehow become nations of colossal idiots, who think backward is forward, up is down, and dumb is smart. Pardon my French."
We, of course lose track of how many things Trump is rolling back...not for any sane, logical, reasonable or economics based reason. ONLY because he thinks some clueless minority of Americans will "feel great" about going backwards...as if more air pollution will automatically bring back the old values!

Honest to god, the manufacturers and states came up with an agreement that pollutes less and has greater mileage requirements and the government has a problem. This is our version of the Taliban.

Yes, Trump is literally making national policy based on what he thinks the feelings of some white trash hicks in West Virginia are about the topic.
Imported cars are built to meet US emissions and safety standards not Euro and those classic Ferraris and Lambos and custom car are big time gas guzzlers and polluters. I wouldn't say Euro cars have higher emissions and safety standards just different and sometimes lower.
They also pay a 'gas guzzler' tax on those kinds of vehicles, but in reality, they are not driven that often, so its probably insignificant.
That's total BS, the car manufacturers made a better product after the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 requiring 35MPG average by 2020. All the American manufacturers became more competitive particularly when gas prices shot up. It doesn't matter what you think all the European manufacturers are going forward towards 50 MPG, maybe Trump can ban imports that exceed our fuel efficiency standard next.
One of the assumptions in the EPA roll back was that 6 million fewer cars would be on the road, but we are used to junk science with this EPA with fossil fuel executives at the helm.
This is going nowhere fast with 12 states suing the EPA. So strange that you have manufacturers in agreement to do the right thing and the government injects itself using the DOJ as a weapon.
Great article on the history, the only time we cared in the past was when gas was expensive or when there was an embargo, when gas was cheap no one cared.
No, the powertrains and drive trains, tuning and steering are not "better", not as affordable, not as reliable and durable, not as good drivability. And the real world fuel usage and emissions are not significantly better in the real world if at all. The regulations even monkeyed with the A/C refrigerant again causing issues there.
They also pay a 'gas guzzler' tax on those kinds of vehicles, but in reality, they are not driven that often, so its probably insignificant.
A gas guzzler surcharge was paid at one time when purchased new. My point was cars where ever they are made are made to meet US standards that are different and can be more stringent than other standards like in Europe and Asia, and that leftists can be gross polluters while demanding everyone else shoulder the cost and burden of lowering their own pollution and consumption.
Yet, cars are performing better and lasting longer than ever before...
No cars made after 2012 are not lasting longer than before. The ultimate performance numbers depends on the model and is not the issue, the drivability, cost and complexity, durability, reliability and repairability is all impacted for minor increases in fuel mileage and emissions on a laboratory test cycle.
Never ever ask conservatives to conserve. It enrages them.
What are progressive leftists conserving in net? I'm trying to conserve 1990s automotive design systems, which were the best trade off. I'm trying to conserve the standard of living and the environment through immigration reduction. Leftist just burden and impose upon everything.
