Sad that the major concern of children is---"their " inheritance in regards to their parents .
Yeah but if you lose your assets/nest egg in a major lawsuit after maiming or killing someone on the road, poof, no money for the kids to inherit (assets you lovingly had hoped to pass on).
LC's comment was not making a judgment on inheritance. He was wisely saying that if otherwise apathetic grown children do not make sure their really old-old parents stop driving, they stand to have something to lose. Nothing wrong with inheritance, inherently.
My 89 year old FIL - whose license expired last December and his physician told him to stop driving.... is driving. In LOS ANGELES. No license, no insurance.
Why? Because my 91 year old MIL wasn't feeling well enough to drive him to the doctor - much less accompany him.
He is deaf in one ear thanks to radiation for lymphoma. I'm certain his response time is horrible.
We are going to CA in January for a "welfare check" and will once again ride with them - and urge them to go into assisted living. I can just hear my MIL say "over my dead body"... well - that may be the case.
They are COMPLETELY oblivious to the fact they could take someone else out when they themselves could die.
I'd like to report them to the CA DMV.... but they will have to take away their car in order for them to truly NOT be tempted to drive.
She is an OK driver - but also a DIVA who likes to be driven.

This is a nightmare and lives are hanging in the balance. I think it's the adult kids' duty to force our hand in these situations and do everything it takes to put an end to it. It's a tragedy waiting to happen. No license??? No insurance??? Report him.

... cars with elders at the wheel who do not know it's on because they can not HEAR the blinker mechanism and are so unaware that they don't look at their dashboard that often to see the blinking light. I don't know how many times I've had to say "your blinker's on."
Guilty as charged! Of course it doesn't help that I have to turn up the volume of the radio to hear it, nor that my daily driver is a noisy diesel pickup. Sometimes I don't even hear my cell phone ringing so that I can fumble with it.
All you young whipper-snappers had better steer clear if you see a grey-hair coming your way in a big vehicle. We also have good insurance, so we don't care what we run over.

i agree i use my turn signals, dont tailgate, only go the speed limit never stomp it on the yellow and only change 1 lane at a time, and never stop on the freeway to back up and catch an exit. i agree i am not driving like the other people around me at all and pose a true threat to their safety..

Huh! No I don't. With seven children between us it wouldn't amount to a whole lot for each of them anyway. Regardless, I hope we spend the bulk of it enjoying ourselves. We earned it. We deserve it.
