Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but SC's strong bible-belt culture (MUCH stronger than Charlotte's believe it or not) would make Sunday morning tailgating a big no-no with the religious leaders of the state. On the other hand, Spartanburg did pull it off for the Panthers' first season while the stadium was being built in Charlotte. Also, SC did get a lottery before NC (which kinda debunks my previous religion comment). Still though, I just can't imagine a full time NFL team in SC sooner than 20 years from now. To be perfectly honest, SC's best chance of having a NFL team is if Charlotte builds a billion-dollar-plus stadium in Fort Mill for the Panthers.

Completely disagree. The money would speak louder than anything.

It's a moot topic anyway. If the local pastors of potential host cities don't block this idea, the majority/minority owners of the Panthers would.

In Charleston it wouldn't be a problem. You can sell all the booze you want in Charleston on Sundays.

And I agree, it'd be 10-20 years from now. Jerry Richardson first dreamt of the Panthers in the mid-80's, when Charlotte was about the size of what Columbia, Charleston, Gville are now. And it took him 10 years to get it.....at a time when the Charlotte metro was tipping over the 1,000,000 mark in the early 90's. Or, the size the Cola and Charleston metros should be in 10-20 years. Which was my whole original point.......until that knucklehead GSP jumped in....who reps the Charlotte area so poorly by the way.

But, for anyone to say the state of SC could not fill an NFL stadium is crazy. We fill two college stadiums with 85K every Saturday. And USC filled theirs during an 0-22 streak. 10-20 years from now....yeah, they'd fill it. An NFL stadium wouldn't need to be as big either. Many NFL stadiums are smaller than the largest of the college ones.

Why do you want more NFL teams. There are already too many bad and mediocre teams.

SC does not fill two college stadiums (USC & Clemson) every Saturday. This could only be true if both teams played only home games, which of course is not the case.

Anyways, an NFL team is not coming to SC so it's a mute point.

This has turned into a city and state debate thread. I like both states, but back to the OP's fantasy topic, there are many cities I can think of with a greater chance of getting a team or yet another team. Vegas, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, another team for LA, these are a few that would be far ahead of a team ever locating in South Carolina. Who's to say what will happen in another 20 years, to this country or to the individual states discussed.

I'm not a pro sports fan due largely to the insane salaries and how much these teams expect the cities to put in, new stadiums etc. And because the National Football League takes in more than $9.5 billion per year and yet is exempt from Federal taxes. That makes suckers of the fans and cities spending money to keep their teams.

THey have played on the same Saturday many times, and they're always full. USC fans don't go to Clemson games, and vice versa.

And no.......there wont be a team here anytime in the foreseeable future. It is a mute point....for now.

But remember, in 1985 when Jerry Richardson was dreaming of the Panthers......Charlotte was a small metro area of 500K people, and everyone said it was too small for the NFL and that he had no chance in hell. A decade later....they opened their inaugural season......at Clemson stadium in SC.

Two clarifications.......Richardson did not even talk about the NFL until close to 1990 when metro Charlotte's population was 1.2m. And, the city was home to what was then NCNB, First Union, and Duke. These corporations and many others were required to provide he necessary financial support for the NFL to make the team feasible. So, Charleston is 550k people short of where Charlotte (current population of 2.4m) was in 1990 and much further away from Charlotte in 1990 in terms of financially being able to support a team. Charleston has been growing in the best years at 15k annually, in 20 years that only gets you to 900k, still well short of where Charlotte was 24 years ago.

SC is part of the Panther's home market. No way the NFL awards another team to this area even in 20 years.

He officially revealed and announced his BID for a team in 1987. If he announced the BID for the team in 87......he and his group had been planning and exploring the idea for, what, at least 2 years? They're businessmen. They don't announce huge plans without a lot of background planning and investigating done......even us tip-workers in Charleston know that. You don't obviously. Growing up in the SC upstate, there were rumors of Spartanburg, SC native Jerry Richardson trying to get the NFL in the Carolinas throughout the early-mid 80's due to his thriving Hardees business. You are ignorant on this topic.

Charleston's "best years" of growth in the past....were prior to Boeing and the aerospace tech expanding here. Charleston will grow faster in the next 20 years than the past 20 years.

And the NFL doesn't have a rule barring two teams in one state.

You think the Dolphins and Bucs welcomed a new team in Florida? (Jacksonville)
You think the Cowboys wanted the Texas to come in-state?
You think Kansas City (Missouri) wanted the Rams to leave LA and relocated to St Louis, Missouri?

But, either way, you live in Charlotte. This is a SC forum. How about go enjoy your Wal-Mart metro area. We'll enjoy our smaller, more intimate one.
