Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but SC's strong bible-belt culture (MUCH stronger than Charlotte's believe it or not) would make Sunday morning tailgating a big no-no with the religious leaders of the state. On the other hand, Spartanburg did pull it off for the Panthers' first season while the stadium was being built in Charlotte. Also, SC did get a lottery before NC (which kinda debunks my previous religion comment). Still though, I just can't imagine a full time NFL team in SC sooner than 20 years from now. To be perfectly honest, SC's best chance of having a NFL team is if Charlotte builds a billion-dollar-plus stadium in Fort Mill for the Panthers.

And I agree, it'd be 10-20 years from now. Jerry Richardson first dreamt of the Panthers in the mid-80's, when Charlotte was about the size of what Columbia, Charleston, Gville are now. And it took him 10 years to get it.....at a time when the Charlotte metro was tipping over the 1,000,000 mark in the early 90's. Or, the size the Cola and Charleston metros should be in 10-20 years. Which was my whole original point.......until that knucklehead GSP jumped in....who reps the Charlotte area so poorly by the way.

And USC filled theirs during an 0-22 streak. 10-20 years from now....yeah, they'd fill it. An NFL stadium wouldn't need to be as big either. Many NFL stadiums are smaller than the largest of the college ones.

This has turned into a city and state debate thread. I like both states, but back to the OP's fantasy topic, there are many cities I can think of with a greater chance of getting a team or yet another team. Vegas, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, another team for LA, these are a few that would be far ahead of a team ever locating in South Carolina. Who's to say what will happen in another 20 years, to this country or to the individual states discussed.
I'm not a pro sports fan due largely to the insane salaries and how much these teams expect the cities to put in, new stadiums etc. And because the National Football League takes in more than $9.5 billion per year and yet is exempt from Federal taxes. That makes suckers of the fans and cities spending money to keep their teams.

He officially revealed and announced his BID for a team in 1987. If he announced the BID for the team in 87......he and his group had been planning and exploring the idea for, what, at least 2 years? They're businessmen. They don't announce huge plans without a lot of background planning and investigating done......even us tip-workers in Charleston know that. You don't obviously. Growing up in the SC upstate, there were rumors of Spartanburg, SC native Jerry Richardson trying to get the NFL in the Carolinas throughout the early-mid 80's due to his thriving Hardees business. You are ignorant on this topic.
Charleston's "best years" of growth in the past....were prior to Boeing and the aerospace tech expanding here. Charleston will grow faster in the next 20 years than the past 20 years.
And the NFL doesn't have a rule barring two teams in one state.

You think the Cowboys wanted the Texas to come in-state?
You think Kansas City (Missouri) wanted the Rams to leave LA and relocated to St Louis, Missouri?
