I ordered a case of ammo kinda late and it was delivered to my FFL after Jult 1st. I went in for a pickup fully anticipating a background check and the hassle. Now I bought the gun back in 1990 but the instant background check database AFS does not have the DROS record of your purchase until after 2010. So if you've bought a gun before that time, you'll be REJECTED and need to pay additional $19 for a "standard" background check and wait upto 10 days.

To complicate the matter further, even if you bought your gun after 2010 and be on the AFS database, if you have moved and failed to notify California DOJ then your address will not match and will be automatically REJECTED as well. So you'll go through the standard background check, pay $19 and wait upto 10 days. It doesn't matter if you buy 20 rounds or 2,000 rounds.

Fortunately for me, my standard background check only took 4 days and I am now approved to pickup my ammo. In the future, I'll have to go through this EVERY SINGLE TIME to purchase ammo. This law is clearly a harrassment to California LAW ABIDING CITIZENS who own guns and buy ammo. There are so many holes in this law that it does nothing to stop criminals to obtain ammo (for example, this law does nothing for non-California residents to drive in with 100 Ks of ammo and "gift" to their friends). It's a blatant anti-2nd Ammendment policy by the Socialist government of California to harass legal gun owners of California citizens.

It's a junk law.
Do you and others have to pay $19 every time you buy ammo?

I'm surprised the NRA didn't fight this tooth and claw.

I'll let you know the next time I order the SAME ammo to see if I pass the $1 instant background check. It maybe a long time before I need to re-order as what I ordered was 1,000 rounds of 357 magnum.

But this is a stupid law for another reason. As you know, the registration of a handgun is on the "frame" of the gun. Suppose I bought a 40S&W semiautomatic, now the AFS has the data on me as owning a 40 caliber. But also as you know, I can buy interchangeable barrels for the same frame and shoot different calibers. So I can order a 9mm barrel and a 357 Sig barrel without going through the background checks. This is ALL LEGAL per California DOJ regulations.

Now what happens when you tried to order 9mm and .357 sig ammo? The DOJ AFS database will instantly REJECT you because the caliber of ammo you want to buy in is different than what shows in your AFS database. Even if you pay $19 for an extended background check I am not certain you will pass. As I was told by my FFL, the extended background check use a DROS database instead. But there will be no record of you having ever been through DROS with a 9mm or a 357 sig caliber handguns.

You see the problem? Even if you follow the laws, this "system" is flawed and will deny you from acquiring the ammo for the calibers which you have legally acquired.

So it sounds like a lot of citizens will be driving over to AZ and NV to buy their ammo. I bet the businesses and taxpayers there love it.

I just check the DOJ website. I will have to pay the $19 and wait upto 10 days EVERYTIME I purchase ammo, it seems like I am not on the AFS database.

Yes, buy one that is broken, thus cheap so that he can buy ammo for that size and use it with the one he has that he can adapt to the size he wishes to use.

The last two are poor replies in my opinion. Forcing everyone to spend more money to buy ammo. Democrats know they can't confiscate guns right now so they do the next thing. make guns unusable with no ammo or make it so expensive and a pain in the rear to comply with all their laws that most just give up on owning a gun.

Once you pay the boot licker fee to voluntarily put your name in some database that has no reason to exist except to "maybe" come get your crap at gun point. It's a one time fee except the dollar to keep "tracking" what you have.

It's a back door attempt to regulate guns. If you buy ammo for a gun that only takes x y z ammo they know you have one. Just say NO and reload. All legal and F the State idiot politicians.

Maybe a liberal can come by and tell us the usefulness of this new law? I already have my prepared bullet proof, pun intended, responses. I just want to see the dripping emotion. Logic vs tears.

What? This is definitely a "loophole". How dumb are these politicians? Of course they are going to do that. Do you have any illegal aliens or fruit? No? Ok, have a nice day.
