Instead of trying to take territory from its neighbors, why doesn't the Russian government simply encourage these ethnic Russians to move into Russia itself? This way Russia does not continue to damage its relations with the United States, Canada and virtually the whole of Europe.
Russia is already the world's largest empire so its not like they need more land. More importantly is the Russian people because as other have pointed out, the ethnic Russian population in Russia was declining. So it makes sense to try to encourage ethnic Russians to move into Russia itself.
Perhaps free land and housing or maybe a financial incentive to move to Russia? Encourage people to move to strategic areas where the Russian government wants to strengthen the Russian population.
I think that's an interesting point. However, only the most naive truly believes that any of this has to do with the Russian government caring about the ethnic Russian population in Ukraine (when has the Russian gov't ever cared about its people?!). It cares about NATO/EU/USA moving further into its sphere of influence.
"The most dangerous moment in the Ukrainian crisis so far may well have arrived. The security operations undertaken by the Kiev government have been received by Russia with alarm. "Events are beginning to develop under the worst case scenario," said one senior official in Moscow... The question now is whether that response will be seized upon by Moscow as a pretext for military action. "
Why would civilians want to take over an airfield? It's crystal clear that the separatists are are supported by the Russian special forces. They clear out all the buildings and then they give them to these drunks and thugs.
In Kiev, a rally was held in support of the arrested police officers who participated in the Maidan Square. Representatives of the new government (the "Right sector" activists) tried to stomp a poster of the dead policemen, but the woman did not give it to do.
Ashamed of Ukrainians.
